Michael Avenatti was $15 million in debt when he tried to extort money from Nike.

https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/prosecutors-deeply-debt-michael-avenatti-sought-payday-67927118

NEW YORK -- Prosecutors say California attorney Michael Avenatti was over $15 million in debt when he tried to extort up to $25 million from Nike, while Avenatti's lawyers say the money he legally requested to conduct an internal probe of the sportswear giant was a bargain.

Both sides made the assertions in court papers filed late Tuesday in advance of a Jan. 22 criminal trial in Manhattan, giving U.S. District Judge Paul G. Gardephe time to decide what the jury will be allowed to hear and see.

For Avenatti, it is the first of three scheduled trials in the next five months. He has denied all charges.

Criminal charges against him in other cases include allegations in New York that he defrauded ex-client porn star Stormy Daniels out of proceeds of a book deal and charges in Los Angeles that he defrauded clients of millions of dollars.

In their submission, federal prosecutors said they plan to show the jury that Avenatti owed “conservatively, in excess of $15 million." Those debts were owed to former clients, one of more former law partners, both of his former spouses for child and spousal support in arrears and a lawyer the government has identified only as “Attorney-1,” they said.

He claims Mark Geragos is also deeply involved with the Nike negotiations. Mark Geragos was, at the time of the accusations as I recall, the attorney for Jessie Smollet who claimed to have been attacked in a racially motivated crime in Chicago.

Michael Avenatti is now in the SHU at MCC, sleeping under three blankets in El Chapo's old cell. His lawyers want him transferred to general population—> https://twitter.com/big_cases/status/1219470411701854208

This sounds familiar.

Looks like it's tough finding jurors.

https://nypost.com/2020/01/27/notorious-scumbag-potential-jurors-tossed-for-bashing-michael-avenatti/

Dozens of jurors were tossed Monday from their chance to serve as jurors in the impending Nike extortion trial of Michael Avenatti — with many blasting the controversial lawyer as a “scumbag” and a liar.

“Michael Avenatti is a notorious scumbag who is willing to do anything, including lie and cheat in order to enrich himself and gain public attention,” one potential panelist wrote. “He should already be in prison.”

“He started to believe his own hype and thought he was above the law,” wrote another.

The second day of the trial, lawyers argued that Avenatti didn't care about hurting teenagers.

An assistant US attorney called Avenatti's trial "a case about a shakedown".

Remember when Democrats roundly hailed Michael Avenatti as presidential material and "savior of the Republic"?

Sure, he may be sitting in El Chapo's jail cell right now.

But Avenatti is STILL the best hope Dems have at winning in 2020.

The judge who was supposed to hear the embezzlement trial between Avenatti and Stormy Daniels has died.

There's a lot going on here.

The coach who hired Avenatti says he was never told the extent that Avenatti was going to attack Nike. He claims he was blindsided by Avenatti's threats to Nike.

https://www.courthousenews.com/coach-who-retained-avenatti-calls-demands-overblown/

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-crime-avenatti/coach-who-hired-michael-avenatti-says-he-wanted-to-expose-nike-not-in-press-conference-idUSKBN2012F4

His former office manager testified that her boss saw a shakedown of Nike as an answer to his financial woes. A lot in here about the coach too.

https://nypost.com/2020/02/06/michael-avenatti-saw-nike-shakedown-as-way-to-clear-his-debts-witness/

“I didn’t want to make it public because I didn’t want to hurt Nike, I didn’t want to hurt any of the kids or the parents, I didn’t want to hurt my reputation or my program’s reputation.”

The basketball coach said he never suspected Avenatti — and refused to speak to him after his arrest.

Prosecutors say Avenatti is extremely loud in court.

https://nypost.com/2020/02/04/michael-avenatti-was-extremely-loud-during-testimony-prosecutors-say/

A recording was played in court of what Avenatti was saying to Nike.

https://nypost.com/2020/01/31/hear-michael-avenattis-alleged-extortion-of-nike/

The recording was played for jurors Thursday as prosecutors attempted to prove that the embattled lawyer tried to shake down a Nike lawyer, Scott Wilson, for over $20 million in exchange for not taking corruption allegations to the press.

“Look, Scott, listen. I’m not f–king around with this,” a voice identified as Avenatti’s says on the March 2019 call, which Wilson was recording for the FBI. “I’m not continuing to play games. This isn’t complicated.”
