"Covid-19, the new coronavirus that has killed nearly 1,800 people in China, causes only mild disease in four out of five people who get it, WHO has said.

"“It appears that Covid-19 is not as deadly as other coronaviruses, including Sars and Mers,” said the WHO director general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, adding that officials were “starting to get a clearer picture of the outbreak”.

"The conclusion comes from analysis of data from Chinese authorities relating to 44,000 cases of Covid-19 in Hubei province, where the coronavirus was first recorded."

The evacuees who were shown to have tested positive were taken out of the isolation chambers on the planes after both planes were flown to a special isolation unit in Omaha. The other evacuees were immediately tested as they went into quarantine at the Air Force bases and will be monitored closely for any sign of illness. They had all been on the buses together as the authorities didn't have the positive results until they arrived at the airport. None were showing symptoms when taken from the ship. This article says 10 had tested positive and are showing mild symptoms of the virus then further on, says again that 14 tested positive. One was taken to the bio-containment unit in Omaha. Health officials in China have published the first details of more than 70,000 cases of Covid-19, in the biggest study since the outbreak began.

Data from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CCDC) found that more than 80% of the cases have been mild, with the sick and elderly most at risk.

The research also points to the high risk for medical staff.

It comes as a hospital director in Wuhan died from the virus on Tuesday.

The findings put the overall death rate of the Covid-19 virus at 2.3%.

China's latest official figures released on Tuesday put the overall death toll at 1,868 and 72,436 infections.

More than 12,000 people have recovered, according to Chinese authorities.

No word yet on test results from any of the Americans evacuated to the US from the Diamond Princess. In the mean time, 160 who were evacuated in early February on the first flights out of Wuhan China are scheduled to be released this morning as their quarantine ends. More will be released on Thursday.

OKOHAMA, Japan (AP) — Hundreds of passengers began leaving the Diamond Princess cruise ship Wednesday after the end of a much-criticized, two-week quarantine that failed to stop the spread of a new virus among passengers and crew.

Results were still pending for some passengers who've been tested for the coronavirusthat has infected tens of thousands of people in China and more than 540 on the ship.

Many foreign governments say they won't let in passengers from the ship until they have another quarantine period, so it was striking to see passengers disembark, get into taxis and disappear into Yokohama.

Even though Japanese officials insist the number of infected patients is leveling off, dozens of new cases on the ship continue to mount daily. On Tuesday, 88 people tested positive; a day earlier 99 others were found to have been infected.

Crew members, who couldn't be confined to their rooms over the last two weeks because they were working, are expected to stay on the ship.

actually ROK government makes a church as scapegoat.

already lots of infected Chinese wandered in ROK.

and government also say that we controlled the disease just before this incident happens.

government even recommends not to wearing mask, how crazy it is!

now infected people are  more than 204 in ROK, just  number doubled in one day!

I have bought lots of food preparing for pandemic!

Even hospital I had visited frequently last year also sealed because infected person visited that hospital.

Pretty soon, the epidemiologists can forget the hyper- fast work and overtime and just settle in to a regular schedule of work.  Trying to trace contacts in an emergency tempo won't be necessary.  At some point, it just can't be done any longer because of the numbers of cases and the multiple sites where outbreaks are growing.  The deaths of two Iranians shocked me.  How did they make contact with the virus?  I'm sure it happened the "old fashioned" way but some extra info would be nice.  These clusters that seem to appear from nowhere and which can't be traced back, are very disturbing.

The virus cases are reportedly much more severe in Northern Italy for some reason, with a higher percentage of critical cases.

It’s unclear why this is, however, since a number of factors could explain it, including a mutation, relative age and health of the patients, local protocols for what constitutes “severe” etc...
