Raptor Witness Posted January 7, 2020 #5 Share Posted January 7, 2020 This is very sad, especially given that Puerto Rico has not yet, fully recovered from hurricane Maria. Eldorado Posted January 8, 2020 #8 Share Posted January 8, 2020 (edited) "Why so many earthquakes are rocking Puerto Rico" "The island is particularly susceptible to what’s known as earthquake swarms, or series of events that are roughly the same magnitude, explains Elizabeth Vanacore, a seismologist with the Puerto Rico Seismic Network (PRSN) at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez. "Why, though, is an open scientific question, she says." +susieice Posted January 11, 2020 Author #13 Share Posted January 11, 2020 (edited) Puerto Rico is being hit with an earthquake swarm. There have been over 950 since December 31. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/01/10/puerto-rico-earthquake-swarm-tectonic-plates/4420857002/ According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there have been more than 950 earthquakes and aftershocks recorded on Puerto Rico since Dec. 31, though many were weak and could not be felt. More than 500, however, have been of magnitude 2 or higher. "We don’t well understand why the larger earthquakes continue for a while," he said. "It may have to do with slow slip on faults in the area or perhaps the hydrology of the fault system." Tectonics in Puerto Rico are dominated by the convergence between the North America and Caribbean tectonic plates, with the island being squeezed between the two, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. To the north of Puerto Rico, the North American plate "subducts" beneath the Caribbean plate along the Puerto Rico trench. (Subduction occurs when an oceanic plate runs into a continental plate and slides beneath it.) Edited January 11, 2020 by susieice

It’s going to re-energize an unstable situation,” he said, adding that seismologists are studying which faults were activated. “It’s a complex zone.”

+susieice Posted January 14, 2020 Author #17 Share Posted January 14, 2020 Reports are that 99% of the electricity has been restored. The army is building tent cities for those residents that have been displaced. People are afraid to go back into their homes until they are determined to be safe. https://www.npr.org/2020/01/13/796018006/after-quakes-puerto-ricos-electricity-is-back-on-for-most-but-uncertainty-remain According to its latest forecast, there are three possible scenarios for the island's "earthquake sequence" over the next month. It gives a 21% chance for a quake as large as last week's 6.4 magnitude to occur. A more likely scenario, it said, is that "aftershocks will continue to decrease in frequency over the next 30 days" which USGS says has a 76% chance of happening. While unlikely, the organization said, "Recent earthquakes could trigger an earthquake significantly larger" than last week's. But it puts that scenario at a slim 3%.
