The Mayor of Ponce has reported one death and eight injured. This link has a good video. The island has had over 700 earthquakes since the end of December, most of them unnoticed.

Puerto Rico is still reporting at least one death and nine injured. There have been at least 24 aftershocks. The island has declared a state of emergency.

This is very sad, especially given that Puerto Rico has not yet, fully recovered from hurricane Maria.

I wonder... is it possible that Puerto Rico is a thermometer for U.S. all?

Make the United States and her territories a tourist destination of disasters.

Let us all, hope not ....

"Why so many earthquakes are rocking Puerto Rico"

"The island is particularly susceptible to what’s known as earthquake swarms, or series of events that are roughly the same magnitude, explains Elizabeth Vanacore, a seismologist with the Puerto Rico Seismic Network (PRSN) at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez.

"Why, though, is an open scientific question, she says."

ABC finally said on the news at noon that most of Puerto Rico's residents have water now. Power to some has been restored. They may need to build a new power plant because of damages.

There is a lot of damage and Puerto Rico has a lot of internal issues as well.

Puerto Rico is being hit with an earthquake swarm. There have been over 950 since December 31.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/01/10/puerto-rico-earthquake-swarm-tectonic-plates/4420857002/

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, there have been more than 950 earthquakes and aftershocks recorded on Puerto Rico since Dec. 31, though many were weak and could not be felt. More than 500, however, have been of magnitude 2 or higher.

"We don’t well understand why the larger earthquakes continue for a while," he said. "It may have to do with slow slip on faults in the area or perhaps the hydrology of the fault system."

Tectonics in Puerto Rico are dominated by the convergence between the North America and Caribbean tectonic plates, with the island being squeezed between the two, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

To the north of Puerto Rico, the North American plate "subducts" beneath the Caribbean plate along the Puerto Rico trench. (Subduction occurs when an oceanic plate runs into a continental plate and slides beneath it.)

US news is reporting it as a 6.0. Buildings that were already damaged have come down.

Víctor Huérfano, director of Puerto Rico’s Seismic Network, told The Associated Press that he expects still more aftershocks as a result of the latest large one.

It’s going to re-energize an unstable situation,” he said, adding that seismologists are studying which faults were activated. “It’s a complex zone.”

The earthquakes have changed the landscape of the island of Puerto Rico. It can be seen from satellites. There have been over 2,000 earthquakes since December 31st.

Reports are that 99% of the electricity has been restored. The army is building tent cities for those residents that have been displaced. People are afraid to go back into their homes until they are determined to be safe.

https://www.npr.org/2020/01/13/796018006/after-quakes-puerto-ricos-electricity-is-back-on-for-most-but-uncertainty-remain

According to its latest forecast, there are three possible scenarios for the island's "earthquake sequence" over the next month.

It gives a 21% chance for a quake as large as last week's 6.4 magnitude to occur. A more likely scenario, it said, is that "aftershocks will continue to decrease in frequency over the next 30 days" which USGS says has a 76% chance of happening.

While unlikely, the organization said, "Recent earthquakes could trigger an earthquake significantly larger" than last week's. But it puts that scenario at a slim 3%.

A 5.2 hit Puerto Rico today according to the USGS.

These poor people just can't get a break. More than 1280 earthquakes have hit the island since December 28th. More than two dozen were 4.5 or higher.

Another 5.0 earthquake struck Puerto Rico today. Experts say local fault lines are responsible but are still investigating to see why the earthquakes have been continuing since December 28th.

There's been a lot of them in the last couple days. Barstow, CA had a 5.2 a couple days ago and Turkey just had a really bad one.

There were 5 small earthquakes in Tennessee, near the North Carolina border, early Tuesday morning (2/11). They ranged between 1.3 and 1.7. They likely weren't felt by anyone. Nothing bad, just unusual.
