TV cameras to film in criminal courts for first time in major law change

TV cameras are to be allowed to film in Crown Courts in England and Wales for the first time.

New legislation being laid before Parliament will allow judges' sentencing remarks in serious high-profile criminal cases to be seen and heard by TV and online audiences.

The legislation will, for the first time, allow TV cameras to film judges passing sentence in murder, sexual offences, terrorism and other serious high-profile criminal cases in Crown Courts in England and Wales, including the Old Bailey.

Filming in the Scottish Courts has been allowed subject to permissions and conditions since 1992 but it does not happen that often and the first filming of a sentencing in Scotland was in 2012.

TV cameras will film in some criminal courts in England and Wales for the first time from Thursday.

The major change in the law will allow broadcasters to film judges sentencing serious criminals.

The arrival of cameras at the Old Bailey and other Crown Courts comes nine years after the move was first promised.

Broadcasting of entire trials will remain off limits, unlike in the US and some other nations.

The expected first broadcast will be from the Old Bailey on Thursday and concerns a man who killed his own grandfather.

Under the new rules, the BBC, ITN, Sky and Press Association can ask to film the very last stage of a criminal prosecution when a judge sentences a convicted defendant.

  • The title was changed to TV cameras to film in criminal courts for first time in major law change

Not sure its a good idea, coverage of parliament turned it into a sound bite circus.

The press will only want to cover silly celebrity trials and other inconsequential stuff.

Courts will become the equivalent of arenas showing gladiator fights in Rome.

But cheap tv for 24hr news channels so they will be pleased.

Edit - just noticed whole trials will not be shown, so some common sense shown. :tu:
