John Bercow 'nominated for peerage

Recommended Posts

itsnotoutthere

Labour is nominating former Commons speaker John Bercow for a peerage, according to reports.

Mr Bercow, who stepped down from the role last year, drew fire from a number of prominent Brexiteers over the past few years as he was accused on helping support a Remain agenda in the Commons.

It was reported that Tory high command was so angered by Mr Bercow's stance that it took the highly unusual decision not to offer a retiring Commons speaker a place in the House of Lords.

However, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has stepped in and nominated Mr Bercow for a peerage, according to the Sunday Times.

The phrase 'as thick as thieves' springs to mind.

On trial for treason would be more appropriate.

What, because he did his job despite threats and criticism he doesn't deserve the same accolades everyone else in his job has received?

During the 2009 expenses scandal, it was revealed that Bercow changed the designation of his second home on more than one occasion – meaning that he avoided paying capital gains tax on the sale of two properties. He also claimed just under £1,000 to hire an accountant to fill in his tax returns. Bercow denied any wrongdoing, but agreed to pay £6,508 to cover any tax that he may have had to pay to HM Revenue and Customs.[43]

It was revealed in 2014 that the House of Commons authorities had destroyed all evidence of MPs' expenses claims prior to 2010. Bercow faced accusations that he had presided over what had been dubbed a "fresh cover-up" of the expenses scandal

And the Taxpayers Alliance said the sums incurred were "obscene".

So just forget about this cheats past ? Disgusting!

The guy is a crook and should have been jailed. There is no excuse apart from greed for what he did.

He should never have been allowed back in the house of lords after all that. Now labour want to give him a peerage? FFS! !!!!!

Does the House of Lords not have someone to frustrate his peerage at every turn? That would be funny to see.

Everybody else in the job did it properly and impartially, Berclowns partisan approach was there for all to see, he made no secret of it.

I know he was batting for your side, and he chose to ignore the people and chose the wrong side, hopefully now he'll pay the price and have to start paying for his own expenses.

Possibly the worst person to ever hold the position.

the fact he was the only speaker in 230 odd years not to be elevated to the house of lords, brilliant move by the Johnson govt. and to a small man like Bercow his massive ego would've took a hit.

The speaker's job is to ensure parliamentary business is carried out correctly.

Not letting the government tear up the rules just to force through their agenda does not make him 'partisan'. I know you wanted those rules broken because it would have got the result you wanted without due scrutiny but he picked the right side.

Might have been the losing side, but that doesn't make it the wrong one.

For 'their agenda' read 'brexit'

P.s. We should have got the result we wanted three years ago, but because of people like Bercow and Miller its taken this long and cost this much.

All they have managed to do is block, obfuscate and delay the process and now these characters have now shown themselves for what they really are, and how they despise the very people they are supposed to serve, and the people gave their response at the ballot box.

P.p.s. I've noticed too that a couple of the labour leader candidates has promised to take us back in to the EU if they get elected. I can pretty much guarantee any party that promises that at the next election is doomed .....Jo Swinson style.

This is Corbyn being his usual bitter self. The self absorbed man is furious that the UK rejected his Marxist socialism Government and particularly him.

Be glad when he is on the back bench again.

Aside from the fact that he threw impartiality in the bin I have had the misfortune to meet Bercow twice in my life.

Once when an Aunt of mine as a free lance producer worked on a documentary and once professionally when I worked with the U.K. youth parliament.

He is not a nice person.  If indeed a peerage can be seen as elevation in our society he is completely undeserving.

Bercow is a monster and safe measures should be put in place so that a vile little troll like him is never allowed to exploit their position as speaker again.

Some kind of independent panel needs to be set up to examine if a speaker is abusing their position and not obeying the requirement of impartiality.

Problem is however we cannot seem to find independent people. They seem to be ro the right or the far far left.

As a Brexit voter I fear it has opened a can of worms of the divide in this country. Hopefully now its in the open we can begin to tackle it as a nation.

I still believe in Brexit but a part of me wishes the referendum never took place because as it highlights how bad the respect for democracy is in this country.

His peerage nomination has to go through the government and it might yet get lost down the back of a sofa, or end up in the dog.

John Bercow was last night accused by his most senior official of bullying staff when he was Speaker.

In a damning intervention which could scupper Mr Bercow’s chances of gaining a peerage, former chief Commons clerk Lord Lisvane filed a formal complaint against his old boss.

Lord Lisvane, who served as Mr Bercow’s chief aide in the early part of his time as Speaker, passed a dossier of allegations to the parliamentary commissioner for standards.

According to The Times, they detail incidents in which Mr Bercow, pictured, was alleged to have bullied and humiliated staff, including some in which he used inappropriate language.

Lindsay Hoyle previously promised he’d scrap Bercow’s reforms that tore up parliamentary precedent; and after today’s PMQs, he made his most public rebuking to date. Watch his post-PMQs statement in full above.

Last January, Bercow caused outrage by overruling the advice of the clerks in allowing an out of order amendment from Dominic Grieve, defying the advice of his senior clerk, and firmly showing the world he had completely abandoned any pretence of impartiality. At the time, he forbade his clerk from making any public comment…

Today, Sir Lindsay has announced a new procedure that will allow the Clerk of the House to publish his advice in the House of Commons Library if the Speaker makes a decision which compromises current Commons rules. Bullying allegations, no peerage and now his legacy being torn up – 2020 isn’t looking like a great year for Bercow…
