The task is performed by TORO, the torque-controlled humanoid robot developed at DLR. All the motions are autonomously executed, and rely on the generation of a suitable step trajectory and on the robust multi-contact balance of the robot in order to be able to reach the desired placement location for the part. The detection of the part feeder, the grasping and placement of the part and the detection of the goal location and possible contact points are vision-based processes based on localization of landmarks, model-based pose estimation, and detection of familiar features on a depth map. I`ve read an article about the TORO robot and what you see in the vid is one of the first attempts of the machine to do the job as described. The robot had no coordinates, never did this job before and had even "no idea" where he is. He just had the order to find the red part and stick it to the red mark at the fuselage part and all this by using his recognition capabilities only. Thats why he was such slow. There is another vid of the project were he/it tried to grab the red part with the fingers. He failed 5 times because he tried to figure out how much pressure by his fingers is required to hold the part. The biggest challenge during the trial was when he was in front of the fuselage part and noted that he could not reach the red spot because of the concave fuselage shape where the red spot was outside his accessibility. The robot considered a while, screened the surrounding and took the decision to use the pillar right to him to fix himself with the right arm to be able to bend forward. Its a self learning unit and it is planned that the experienced ones share their knowledge to the new and stupid ones.
