Two people from the same family have tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, the chief medical officer for England has announced.

They are being treated at a specialist centre in Newcastle after being taken there overnight.

At least 213 people in China have died from the virus, mostly in Hubei, with almost 10,000 cases nationally.

Prof Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England said: "The NHS is extremely well-prepared and used to managing infections and we are already working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had, to prevent further spread.

It is unclear where the two patients are from, but it is understood they are not from the Wirral area, where a special facility has been set up to quarantine those returning from Wuhan.

Well, the British survivors of the Wuhan plague are just arriving back int he UK about now, being flown in by chartered 747 into RAF Brize Norton, and apparently they're going into a high security internment camp in the Wirral? How will they be transported into internment? By prison van?

is just weird. There's a person sitting there in the full spacewalk suit, and persons behind you can just see with those facemasks, but the driver is wearing absolutely no protective clothing and is just looking slightly bemused.

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases climbed to nearly 15,000 on Sunday, while the number of deaths rose to 305 worldwide.

In Hong Kong, thousands of public healthcare workers said they would go on strike starting Monday after the city's government refused to respond to their demands to close the border with mainland China to prevent a further influx of coronavirus cases.

Winnie Yu, chairman of the Hospital Authority Employees Alliance, told journalists on Sunday.

"If there is no full border closure, there won’t be enough manpower, protective equipment, or isolation rooms, to combat the outbreak,".

'I wasn't worried': Coach driver who was pictured driving British coronavirus evacuees to quarantine without a protective suit or mask says he was told the risk is 'very, very low'

The driver would be been quite safe because the only ones who might potentially affect him were wear face masks ;)    If there was much danger anyway.  I guess the guy in the biohaz suit is feeling a right pratt, but has to follow H&S orders to the letter .....

A new study by University of Hong Kong scientists, published in the Lancet, said the outbreak could be even worse than it appears and could get dramatically worse over the next week or two.

They found that as many as 75,815 people in Wuhan had been infected with the coronavirus by January 25, based on an assumption that each infected person could have passed the virus to 2.68 others. It also said the epidemic was doubling every 6.4 days.

If the virus was spreading at a similar level around the country, "we inferred that epidemics are already growing exponentially in multiple major cities of China with a lag time behind the Wuhan outbreak of about 1-2 weeks," the scientists wrote.

Tencent may have accidentally leaked real data on Wuhan virus deaths.

On late Saturday evening (Feb. 1), Tencent, on its webpage titled "Epidemic Situation Tracker", showed confirmed cases of novel coronavirus (2019nCoV) in China as standing at 154,023, 10 times the official figure at the time. It listed the number of suspected cases as 79,808, four times the official figure.

The number of cured cases was only 269, well below the official number that day of 300.

Most ominously, the death toll listed was 24,589, vastly higher than the 300 officially listed that day.

  • The title was changed to Eight coronavirus cases confirmed in UK

Seems the best way to avoid getting 2019-nCoV is to avoid contact with medical staff at all costs!  :D

btw I worked out that so far, after 2 months, less than 0.003% of the Chinese population have caught it (based on official figures - I actually suspect a lot more people have/have had it with no more ill effect than a bad cold, so they've not been recorded)

Chief Medical Officer Dr Frank Atherton said a patient had travelled back from northern Italy, where the virus was contracted.
