I'm just trying to draw people's attention to the creeping fascism of Johnson's administration. Never before in the history of British "democracy" has a government commanded that businesses close like this, not even in the World Wars or the Great Depression; never before has the Government claimed to promise to pay (80% of) everyone's wages because the Government has closed their places of work. The Government now totally controls the lives of millions of people. If you really can't see how totalitarian the Johnson regime has become, in an incredibly short space of time, then you really must have a complete ignorance of the way that totalitarian regimes work. (And yes, I know it's exactly the same with Macron in France, and with the governors of several US States, notably California). What a glorious opportunity this is for the dictator in every politician to come bursting out. And how helpful for the Johnson regime that it happens when there is no effective opposition; disable your opponent with a relentless campaign of smears and then the way is open for you to do whatever you like and no one will question or challenge you because [wring hands sanctimoniously] you're just trying to save lives.

I must remember to panic-buy a few bottles of whisky before Johnson issues the order for us all to remain in our homes, it seems about the only way to survive the realization that you're living under an actual dictatorship.

I see now social media is starting on the  non food shops to close.

My wife is trying to get some food today. She sat in the car park waiting for a space. She observed at least 3 couples return to their car load it up and return to the store. I guess that gets them round the maximum of 3 of any item.

She has just text me waiting at the till. Its all kicking off as somebody has been refused purchase of 20 pints of milk.

changing stance for the sake of argument, 

Are we now seeing, in the government response to covid 19, a Tory Government with a large majority switching to 'leftist' polices. The latest is that they may take shares in large businesses affected by the ramifications of covid 19, eg airlines. 

shares in companies, increases in benefits, subsidy of wages in return for guarantees of employment etc, 

Policies Corbyn would have been proud of.

Not saying anything wrong with these moves, just wondering if such a dramatic shift left, in such trying times, has any underlying messages.

Oh and off course Boris said in one of his daily meanderings that 'this time, unlike 2008, we will help the people really affected'

The number of coronavirus-related deaths across the UK is now 233.

The most recent 53 deaths in England were people aged 41 to 94 who had underlying health conditions, NHS England said.

The NHS has struck a deal with private hospitals to acquire thousands of extra beds, ventilators and medical staff to fight the coronavirus outbreak.

An extra 8,000 hospital beds across England, nearly 1,200 ventilators and almost 20,000 fully qualified staff will be available from next week. The additional staff includes 10,000 nurses, more than 700 doctors and more than 8,000 other clinical staff, who will be joining the health service to help manage an expected surge in cases, said NHS England.

Formula 1 teams are working with government and health authorities to increase the supply of ventilators. A number of teams have applied-technologies divisions that could directly feed into the national production capacity of ventilators in the UK.

The idea is to increase the supply of the existing design of ventilators rather than try to come up with a new approach. The UK is estimated to need an extra 20,000 ventilators to deal with the crisis as it develops over the coming months.

Supermarkets have gone on a hiring spree as demand surges as a result of the coronavirus crisis. Tesco, Asda, Aldi, and Lidl said they would hire thousands of staff after hugely increased demand saw shoppers clearing shelves.

Boris Johnson has now matched Margaret Thatcher’s polling height of 52% of the country backing the Conservatives. A new poll by Ipsos MORI, the fieldwork for which concluded on Monday, has found that Boris rose by five points since the General Election to hit 52%. Boris’ personal satisfaction matches that of his party, at 52%.

that may be so, it does not mean he is making the right decisions though. Personally I think he is, but too slowly, badly thought out before announcing, and too much delay before implementation

• School closures were a fiasco, closed but not closed and only vague directions to schools, subsequently overwritten by answers to questions on TV;
• Advising people to avoid pubs, etc, but not closing them until later and even then encouraging last minute binges
• Announcing grants for business with no direction on how to apply (even today)
• Announcing wage subsides but giving businesses no idea how this will work until April 
• mixed messages on herd immunity......

My local council has been contacting businesses daily to keep us up to date with what is happening.  There is no need to apply - payments will be made automatically as soon as the council receive the funds from central government (expected early April)

Quite probable!   So far our council seems to be acting well.  There is also an initiative underway contacting every household asking whether they need help or can offer help.
