They do, because you can't breathe and spit into the air, towards people, or onto surfaces.

Just to be clear here the so called filters are not filters but valves with the function to ease the exhale. The breath will pass the valve unfiltered, means, aerosoles will pass through from inside out. Check this video. (cannot link directly for display).

Not designed to and that's not why we wear them.

Come on man. It's July 2021, not 2020. This is old news and thoroughly debunked.

Its old news but still relevant, the point I am making is that masks are not 100% reliable. They will provide some protection but in practice how much?

Do experts just assume all observe the mask wearing rule and base estimates of switching on this and then assume all will abandon mask wearing after the rule change causing a worst case estimate of further virus spread?

If we are to compare the current mask wearing effect against the new voluntary system on virus spread the effectiveness of the obligatory mask wearing has to be known.

With not everybody wearing masks now, compared to some who will be wearing masks because they want to, will the switch make much difference ?

Then there is the continued jab roll out and summer school closures to factor in.

In general I think the debate over mask wearing is as much about politics as it is science. ;)

Don't worry about it!

Soon, 100,000+ will be infected every day, but --- thanks to the vaccine rollout --- nobody will end up in the ICU or dead. :tsu:

UK records highest number of coronavirus cases for six months

Sky news

63 deaths for 48553 infections is huge progress, even if its a lot of people getting ill.

Our daily infection rate record is 68053 so I think with the phasing out of lockdown due to be completed soon we are going to pass that easily. I think we might be at the stage where the government lets coronavirus go for it. As it stands its a 0.13% death rate.

And we (USA) may soon be going back into lockdown.  Right now, the states with the highest infection rates are Louisiana, Arkansas and Missouri.  All Trump states.  The hardening political antagonism against vaccination makes no sense, particularly when it was Trump's Warp Speed program that produced the vaccine in the first place and he and his whole family have been vaccinated (That way, they'll be alive so we can prosecute them.).  People who were willing to inject bleach and take hydroxyquinone are not willing to get a covid shot.  What gives?

I expect to see a covid spike here when students return to campus in the fall.  All those germy kids squeezed into crowded dorms in a state with a 35% vaccination rate.

As soon as we defeat delta, lambda is waiting and by then there may be others.

I think we need to get as many kids as possible vaccinated and continue the current campaign at least through the end of the year.  Then start charging normal prices for shots and end the hospital subsidy.  Let people who didn't have the foresight to get a shot pay for their own hospitalization.  A few will still die and eventually we may get enough people infected to precipitate herd immunity in spite of Republican support for the virus.

There are 4 strains of concern at the moment.

Alpha and beta have a mutation on their surface proteins allowing them to enter human cells easier. It means they spread faster. But the vaccines are effective against these so there isn`t significant alarm.

Delta is of significant concern because it also has a surface protein allowing it an easier ride with entering cells. Its of significant concern because in addition to that the vaccines arent as effective against it. And natural immunity gained from Alpha and Beta isn`t as effective against Delta either. It means people can catch Delta after Alpha and Beta, and while the death rates will be lower due to some natural immunity and some from the vaccine, they are still getting proper sick.

Gamma is the biggest concern as it contains a double mutation in its surface protein allowing it to spread quickly, and natural immunity from other variants, and immunity from the vaccine, have a much lower impact on it.

There are two further strains which haven`t been given a Greek letter yet and which are still being researched.

Perhaps the biggest concern regarding the UK government's strategy is how it might turn the country into a breeding ground for new, potentially vaccine-resistant strains. It's a huge, ill-conceived gamble with no real pay-off and with the potential to make things much worse for everyone.

There's also the problem of long Covid, in addition to the inevitable deaths and hospitalizations.

Boris Johnson pursuing Covid policy of mass infection that poses ‘danger to the world’, scientists warn

Boris Johnson’s government has been urged to urgently reconsider its plan to end Covid restrictions in England on Monday, as international scientists warned that the move poses a “danger to the world”.

More than 1,200 scientists from around the globe have condemned the prime minister’s decision to forge ahead with so-called Freedom Day on 19 July, describing it as “unscientific and unethical”.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/boris-johnson-covid-scientists-warning-b1885305.html

It raises the question of whether Boris has ever actually been "following the science" as he claims and makes a mockery of his "data, not dates" catchphrase.

The UK's Covid situation is "world-beating" indeed, as Boris likes to say, but for all the wrong reasons:

I voted for Johnson but the guy is doing it all wrong and has done from the start , we should have followed New Zealands  action from the start and locked down properly , and nowadays unless people are fully vaccinated from all over the world ,they don't get into the  U.K. but that's not happening .

Yeah he squandered multiple opportunities to do the right thing, each time either locking down too little, too late or opening up too much, too quickly.

'Freedom Day', to me, is tantamount to the government giving up and saying "we're bored of this now, just figure it out yourselves."

Boris Johnson has abandoned plans to avoid quarantine after being contacted by NHS Test and Trace following a furious political backlash.

The Prime Minister and Chancellor Rishi Sunak had originally planned to take daily tests rather than self-isolate following meetings last week with Health Secretary Sajid Javid who has tested positive for Covid-19.

But in a dramatic turnaround Downing Street said the two ministers would be self-isolating rather than taking part in a daily contact testing pilot.

Yes, incredibly, after coming into contact with the health secretary who has since tested positive, it was revealed that Boris and Sunak had been "randomly chosen" for a pilot scheme that - rather conveniently - didn't require them to self-isolate at all.

They had to row back on this within the space of just two hours after a major public backlash and because it became apparent that if the Prime Minister wouldn't self-isolate after coming into contact with a positive case, nobody would - especially given that this is literally the day before 'Freedom Day' and they expected everyone else to use "common sense" and be "cautious".

You couldn't make this stuff up - it is absolutely mind-blowing how bad this government is.
