Almost 3,000 Covid deaths added to UK total after discovery of data error

Almost 3,000 Covid-19 deaths have been added to the UK’s official figures after the discovery of a data error.

The cumulative number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for coronavirus rose by an extra 2,714 on Wednesday, in addition to 233 newly reported deaths.

It means the total number of deaths in the UK within 28 days of a positive test is 169,095.

The number of people who currently have coronavirus in the UK is continuing to fall, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It suggests around 3.76 million people were infected in the week ending 16 April - roughly one in 17 people.

This is a fall of about 15% on the week before - when the figure stood at 4.4 million, or around one in 15 people.

The UK government broke the law by discharging untested hospital patients into care homes during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the High Court has ruled.

The case was brought by Dr Cathy Gardner and Fay Harris whose fathers, Michael Gibson and Donald Harris, died after testing positive for coronavirus.

In a ruling on Wednesday, Lord Justice Bean and Mr Justice Garnham concluded that policies contained in documents released in March and early April 2020 were unlawful because they failed to take into account the risk to elderly and vulnerable residents from non-symptomatic transmission of the virus.

What was done in many states in our country was worse.  They discharged KNOWN covid cases into nursing homes. Thousands died as a result and NO ONE is being held accountable for it.

That may be true, unfortunately.  When you have run out of beds and more, very sick people are in the waiting area, you discharge those who will survive anyway to make room for those who are sicker.  It is the responsibility of the nursing home to find other, safe accommodations.  But I have to wonder if anybody ever explained that to them.  And even if they did, what could a nursing home do abut it?

That happened to me.  I was discharged to make room for some very sick people.  I continued infectious for about 11 days after being discharged.  But I went home and stayed there.  I wasn't sent to a nursing home.

Covid infections up after Platinum Jubilee celebrations

Covid infections are up across the UK, according to latest figures that capture the Jubilee weekend of partying.

An estimated 1.4 million people or one in 45 has the virus - up from one in 65 the week before. That's a rise of 43%.

Experts say two new fast-spreading subvariants of Omicron -called BA.4 and BA.5 - are behind some of the new infections.

People can get catch them even if they have recently had other types of Covid.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS), which compiles the data, says it is too early to say if this is the start of another wave.

Bereaved families have warned they may take legal action against the Government over delays to starting the coronavirus public inquiry.

UK Covid levels rise 30% to estimated 2.3m cases last week

Covid infection levels in the UK have risen by more than 30% in a week, with an estimated 2.3 million people thought to have had the disease in late June.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) based on swabs collected from randomly selected households show that in the week ending 25 June, 1,829,100 people in the community in England are estimated to have had Covid, equating to about one in 30 and up from 1,360,600 the week before.

Increases were also seen in the rest of the UK, with an estimated one in 18 people in Scotland, one in 30 in Wales and one in 25 in Northern Ireland thought to have had Covid in the most recent week.

An exodus of teachers could be looming as new recruits who trained during the pandemic have been left feeling isolated, a study from King's College London has found.

Covid-related disruption in 2019/20 and 2020/21 could mean a lack of expertise among staff who trained at the time, leading to higher rates of early career teachers leaving the profession, according to the study.

That could hit the attainment of young people, whose education has already been significantly impacted by the pandemic.

Excess deaths continue to soar despite Covid deaths decreasing

A total of 10,942 deaths from all causes were registered in England and Wales in the week to 26 August, according to the Office for National Statistics.

This is 16.6 per cent above the five-year average, the equivalent of 1,556 “excess deaths” during this week.

However, new figures show a continued downward trend in deaths involving Covid-19, which have fallen to the lowest level since the beginning of July.

A total of 453 deaths registered in the seven days to August 26 mentioned coronavirus on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) – down 18 per cent on the previous week.

The figures come following mounting concern over the high levels of excess deaths in England and Wales, and suggestions delays in NHS treatment are contributing.

One in 70 tested positive, with the largest rise in secondary school children in the week to 14 September.

A new autumn wave of coronavirus has seen the number of patients in hospital with the virus hit the highest level since August, the latest NHS data suggests.

Figures show 7,024 people were in hospital with coronavirus in England as of 8am on 28 September.

This is up 37% from 5,142 the previous week - and is the highest number seen since 19 August.

Its important to note that the positive case statistics remain an estimate only.

Based on the small data set the method used to extrapolate the numbers could just as easily be over inflating the reality, as is recorded world wide since the first covid outbreak  happened.
