Don’t ‘bash’ UK over high number of Covid cases, Oxford vaccine creator says.

Professor Sir Andrew Pollard, who helped create the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, said there were reasons the UK was seeing a high number of confirmed cases, which have been averaging more than 40,000 a day for over a week.

He said it was true the UK had high case rates but this is “very much related to the amount of testing”, including in schools.

Sir Andrew told the Commons Science and Technology Committee: “If you look across Western Europe, we have about 10 times more tests done each day than some other countries, this is per head of population.

Sir Andrew said there was a need to look at hospital admissions and deaths more so than cases, adding that most intensive care cases were among the unvaccinated.

11,600 Brits died of Covid after 'catching virus in NHS hospitals'

A study found that thousands of people who went into hospitals for unrelated treatment ended up contracting coronavirus and dying.

It has been called a “scandal” by MPs and Jeremy Hunt, chairman of the health and social care select committee, feels it is more evidence to show that health workers must be vaccinated.

England has the highest death rates of frail and older hospitalised patients in the western world, a landmark global study has found.

Harvard University, the London School of Economics (LSE) and the thinktank Health Foundation, all part of the International Collaborative on Costs, Outcomes and Needs in Care (Icconic), a global network of healthcare researchers, used thousands of official medical records to compare the cost and quality of care in 10 OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries.

Booster vaccines and third dose jabs will be added to the NHS Covid-19 pass for international travel from Friday.

It will make travel to countries including Israel, Croatia and Austria easier as such destinations have already introduced time limits for when first and second jabs are no longer valid to guarantee quarantine free travel.

48,374 new cases and 171 new deaths

Coronavirus Cases: 10,276,007

Deaths: 145,140

New Covid rules on self-isolation have been enshrined in law until March, as Tory MPs warned Boris Johnson that restricting freedoms was a path “towards hell”.

The regulations forcing people to isolate for 10 days if they come into contact with someone who has the omicron variant or risk a fine of up to £10,000 - even if they are fully vaccinated - will not expire until March 24, under legislation passed by the Commons on Tuesday.

seems like UK is doing worse than anyone else in  he world.  no one reported deaths from new variant, but uk has 148.  they really need a FULL lock down really bad,  including the media.

The UK will have more than one million Omicron cases by the end of this month if current trends continue unchanged - but booster jabs provide 70-75% protection against symptomatic infection, says the Health Security Agency.

At least one person in the UK has died with the Omicron coronavirus variant, the prime minister has said.

Boris Johnson said the new variant was also resulting in hospital admissions, and the "best thing" people could do was get their booster jab.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid told MPs Omicron now represented 20% of cases in England.

Maths isn't your strength is it?

The number you're looking for is 1.

1 death from Omicron.

A laboratory leak is now the more likely origin of Covid, MPs have heard, because after two years of searching an animal host has never been found.

Speaking to the Science and Technology Select Committee, Dr Alina Chan, a specialist in gene therapy and cell engineering at MIT and Harvard, said there was also a risk that Covid-19 was an engineered virus.

There is a risk in blaming science, that’s for sure, and a motive for hiding those facts, if true.

However, the absence of a known animal host, seems suspicious, as well, due to the number of mammals this virus is able to infect. This virus moves freely between mammalian species.

The coincidence of Wuhan, as ground zero, is a reasonable argument, without the exotic live animal food markets, putting live bats in close proximity to other mammal species, in the first place.

The business of putting animals that don’t belong together in nature, in close proximity is as risky as human engineering. That’s the problem with choosing one convenient theory over natural selection.

Remember, the animal hosts were being consumed as food, so of course you may not find the natural index case.

A "major incident" has been declared in London this afternoon (December 18) as Omicron rages across the capital.

It is the second time this year a major incident has been declared in London because of coronavirus.

The UK's eight worst Covid hotspots are now in London, where the variant has become the dominant strain, causing the overall cases to double in just a week.

It comes as the number of Covid-19 cases in London has rapidly increased, with 65,525 new confirmed cases in the past seven days, and 26,418 cases reported in the last 24 hour period alone – the highest number since the start of the pandemic.
