Coronavirus cases confirmed in the UK

Lockdown has been back a week, it only has another week for the peak before it declines.

It might not even make it to 500,000 per day at this rate.

Omicron wave appears milder, but concern remains.

Omicron appears to be around 4-times more transmissible than Delta.

The ICU's may or may not be at breaking point, but the wards will be full, and staff absences will compound the problem.

The government has ruled out announcing new restrictions for England before Christmas, but the other UK nations have already announced the reintroduction of limits on society amid fears of Omicron.

Here's how the restrictions compare across the four nations of the UK.

Speaking from experience, I can tell you that staff absences ALWAYS compound the problems.  What indicators make you believe the wards will be full?  Is that just an assumption due to the enhanced transmissibility of Omicron?  I haven't seen any information about that other than estimates and those seem to be based only on transmissibility.  One does not necessarily cause the other.  This iteration so far, about 6-7 weeks in, has been VERY mild, thank God.

@and then

I based my prediction on the high transmissibility of Omicron, the reduced potency of the variant, and the fact that a positive test of a staff member will cause their absence.

When Covid started, the government set up "Nightingale Hospitals" and other hubs around the UK, which have since closed.

Today, they announced that new Covid hubs are being set up, because of the huge numbers of new infections.

I can see the government reacting in an excess of caution, just in case.  I just wonder how far into the spread of Omicron they will continue the restrictions IF hospitalizations and severe disease aren't being seen on a wide scale.  Last year, early in the onset of the pandemic, we sent two navy hospital ships to NYC and helped fund field hospitals in Central Park and in other states that were being hardest hit.  Most of these extra sites weren't used and later were disassembled.  Back then, there really WERE instances of bodies being stacked up but they were in cold storage trailers, unlike the handful of dead we saw outside of a hospital in LA recently.  I'm still hoping that Omicron provides widespread immunity to the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike and that this allows us to put this scourge behind us.

Yep!  It's better to be ahead of it, than behind it.  :tu:

Bookmaker Ladbrokes claimed £102m from the furlough scheme, despite rapid growth in online betting making up for all losses from the closure of stores.

Accounts published on Thursday show that Ladbrokes claimed £57.5m in 2020, and the BBC understands it claimed a further £44m this year.

Since the pandemic began parent company Entain has actually increased revenues, driven by strong online growth.

There is growing confidence that Omicron could be hurtling the UK into the pandemic endgame.

But what comes next? There will be no snap of the fingers to make the virus disappear. Instead, the new buzzword we'll have to get used to is "endemic" - which means that Covid is, without doubt, here to stay.

So, is a new Covid-era truly imminent and what will that actually mean for our lives?

"We're almost there, it is now the beginning of the end, at least in the UK," Prof Julian Hiscox, chairman in infection and global health at the University of Liverpool, tells me. "I think life in 2022 will be almost back to before the pandemic."

The requirement for all NHS workers to be jabbed against Covid-19 is being “kept under review,” the health secretary has said, as the deadline fast approaches for unvaccinated staff.

Sajid Javid said it was “right” to reflect on coronavirus policies when asked by MPs about mandatory vaccines for NHS workers in England, amid fierce calls for the policy to be scrapped as 77,000 face losing their jobs.

The provision of universal free tests in England is soon ending, after Boris Johnson announced his plan for living with Covid, as the pandemic reaches endemic levels.

From April 1, those not classed as vulnerable will have to pay for a lateral flow test as free universal symptomatic and asymptomatic testing will end for the general public in England.
