skookum Posted May 3, 2020 #834 Share Posted May 3, 2020 I think all this talk of the new normal is more depressing than the present normal. Is it me but the new normal consists of control, restricted civil liberties and rewards solely for those who toe the line or face a county wide lockdown punishment. My vision is to go to work but forced to return home as soon as your working day ends. You will be allowed out twice a day for exercise or treat your family to the occasional drive into the country for a picnic. However forever over your head is the threat of these privileges being withdrawn if the numbers don't stack in your designated areas favour. The carrot is always these can be lifted once a vaccine found. That of course could take years to be available on mass. The new normal was originally speculated to be 6 months rising to 12 then 18 and now indefinitely as we rely on a state controlled vaccine. Maybe the situation is just making me paranoid but the new normal sounds more like a living hell to me. 3

And when it ends it won't be the Govt making that decision. 1

They literally have created a nation hysterical drones that beg to be put under virtual house arrest. This really isn't looking pretty, the Government seem to be at the mercy of scientists who decide how we live our lives. I am not knocking scientists with science, but there is a good reason why we don't have them running countries as the ideal methods are not always practical. If we keep bowing down to them no doubt we will live in a state of permanent lockdowns with a box of vegan food slung on our doors to ensure we comply to what they consider a healthy diet. Pubs, clubs and bars will certainly suffer under the science. At best they have been told months before they would consider opening them but most are suggesting New Year plus. We all know they would prefer that nobody consumed alcohol so I don't trust the recommendations would be purely based on just the problem in hand considering their already biased view. Maybe this is all getting to me but I do fear what world the New Norm is going to consist of and whether it is one I really want to live in.

Maybe this is all getting to me but I do fear what world the New Norm is going to consist of and whether it is one I really want to live in. Its what fear does to a persons mind, the media have created an atmosphere of fear and death. you get the virus your dead. no-wonder they clamour for more lockdown. people have been scared stiff. literally with 5,000 extra excess deaths not due covid. The experts including the scientist and Govt have been off in their predictions before in areas of policy. and the mantra by the Govt is one of were being led by the science, but that shows a Govt in fear. hiding behind the science. its up to the govt to take or leave the advice and decide on policy. with 0.046% of the population dead due to Covid. and according to the experts less than 3% of the population exposed to the virus. it could take years on these figures. So, at some point the virus either becomes as common as the common cold or annual flu that we totter about the place without a care. just in the same way we never concerned ourselves with the 28,000 excess deaths, 50,000 excess deaths. we've had in recent years. Life is for the living. and to that end i cant see many adhering to the lockdown if the govt tries to extend it. and by the signs the govt understand this. as businesses are starting to open up, factories etc.. from the 18th May.

Yes and add to that the states beginning to reopen in phases and we should get a sense in less than a month, whether our discipline will enable us to get back to normal without spiking cases too much. We KNOW they will increase but the degree to which it happens should determine any new restrictions.

skookum Posted May 4, 2020 #841 Share Posted May 4, 2020 Since Friday I have known through my work contracts that a planned 85% rail service in place by 1st June. The rail unions are kicking off today which is strange as it was all signed and sealed Friday. We where asked to keep quiet and await Government announcement but as press have got wind doesn't make much difference now. Also people who work for hotel chain Hilton have also been given the date of 1st June from furlough. The London Hilton is a hive of activity with pallet upon pallet being delivered over the weekend. I also had a few jobs to Victoria, Finsbury park, Euston and Waterloo. The amount of things now opening like cafes etc has grown massively since Friday when they have been shut for 6 weeks. I wont debate whether this is the right or wrong thing to do but a lifting of lockdown does seem to be gaining pace even before official announcement. 1

Ozymandias Posted May 5, 2020 #845 Share Posted May 5, 2020 As is my want and FYI, the latest Office of National Statistics figures re weekly total deaths in England & Wales. It is 110% higher than the 5Year Average for Week 17 and represents a 119% increase on the same week last year, more than double in each case. Bear in mind that these are the figures for England & Wales only - they do not include Scotland or Northern Ireland. Looking at excess deaths in the last six of these weeks, Week 12 to Week 17 inclusive, the following facts emerge: Total Excess Deaths (ONS): 101,037 - 62,483 = 38,554 Total Hospital Deaths (NHS): 20,478 Difference: 18,
stevewinn Posted May 5, 2020 #846 Share Posted May 5, 2020 Latest figures. 21,997 deaths, 11,539 excess deaths. 8,237 Covid. 3,302 excess deaths unexplained. in the last four weeks over 10,000 excess deaths not due to covid. speculation that they could be caused by delayed hospital admissions for other life threatening conditions and other factors such as economic hardship, and mental health problems. and we haven't even started to face real impact and consequences of the shutting down the economy. in the long run more people will die due to the "cure" than died from the virus. on that point. weeks 14, 15, 16. 17. week 14. 3,475 deaths mentioned Covid. - 2,607 excess deaths. Not due to Covid. week 15. 6,213 deaths mentioned Covid. - 1,783 excess deaths. Not due to Covid. week 16. 8,758 deaths mentioned Covid. - 3,096 excess deaths. Not due to Covid. week 17. 8,237 deaths mentioned Covid. - 3,302 excess deaths. Not due to Covid. The picture is starting to become clear - of those expected to die, the cause of death has changed and those expected to die later in the year have been shuffled along sooner. excess deaths due to covid To put it all in perspective from week 1 to week 17. excess deaths above the five year average is running at 20,188, of those 10,788 are not due to Covid. therefore to date excess deaths due to covid 9,400 deaths. excess deaths not due to Covid 10,788. of the 29,648 covid deaths (England & Wales) the cause of death as changed for 20,248. (expected to die on average) 9,400 where not expected to die. but died from covid. 10,788 Where not expected to die. but died from no-covid causes. With many people having to choose between their wife/husband or their lover. At least that bandaid was forced into being removed.
