I've seen birds essentially hovering like this, heading into a strong wind. They appear to balance themselves against the wind, remaining nearly motionless. For a bird of prey, or a scavenger, as this appears to be, this could be a useful maneuver. TomBarnes Posted February 8, 2020 #7 Share Posted February 8, 2020 No. I live in Northern Virginia now and have for years but I lived for five years in central California and four years near the banks of the Mississippi River in Illinois as a much younger man. In the parts of the USA where there are frequent warm updrafts like the West, Southwest and the Midwest this phenomenon is seen all the time. These are either scavengers or birds of prey. They hover like this while targeting prey on the ground. Somehow they have learned to use warm (hot) updrafts to stay stationary or almost stationary in the air while they zero in on prey below. It is a little weird to see this but I have actually seen this or something very similar many times before. Maybe the people who filmed it we involved or maybe they weren't. At the distance they were from the so called bird you would not see the strings attached to it. Below is a photo of a Crow Kite. There looks to be some kind of clear string attached to it. If it was a real bird and if there was a fishing line type of string on it, then it would be panicking. Physically it is impossible. If there is a wind then, unless the object is affixed to a pole, it is going to waver or pitch and yar..that is called 'basic physics' .
