Russia replaces cosmonauts on next ISS crew for 'medical reasons'

Quote

wo Russian cosmonauts have been removed from the next scheduled launch to the International Space Station "for medical reasons," according to the Russian space agency.

In a statement posted to its website on Wednesday (Feb. 19), Roscosmos said that Nikolai Tikhonov and Andrei Babkin will no longer fly to the space station in April, and will instead be replaced by backup crew members.

"The positions of the commander and flight engineer of the Soyuz MS-16 spacecraft will now be taken by Roscosmos cosmonauts Anatoli Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner," the agency said. "The changes will affect only the Russian part of the crew."

Lousy luck... imagine training and preparing for so long, then being pulled at the last minute.  :(

It has to be a horrible blow and if I remember correctly Russia replaces the team because they want people who were trained together.

Correct.

Apparently Tikhonov has an eye injury but both cosmonaut will be replaced by their back up.

Russia has, since the Salyut station days, used psychologists when choosing pairings for long duration missions. They pair cosmonauts that will work well together. Because of this they don't like to split pairings up a short notice.

Russia also did have exceptional common sense in their space program.
