"The homicide rate is five times higher than usual, despite the deployment of the army to patrol the streets.

"The violence has led to the cancellation of carnival festivities in several cities at what is the height of the summer holiday season.

"The police began their strike on 19 February, demanding a pay rise."

Reminds me of a major city in the U.S., Baltimore, IIRC, where the people raised hell after a young black man was shot dead.  The mayor blamed the cops and the cops said okay, we'll stand down.  The citizens were practically begging for them to go back to work in less than a week.

Well, the police did shoot a Senator.

There was also this from the article:

"Senator Gomes' brother, Ciro Gomes, said that he "hoped that the responsible authorities catch those who attempted this barbarous homicide". He also wrote that he and his brother would not let the state be run "by militias"."

Makes me wonder who is doing the shooting.
