Town faces 10-year evacuation over arms dump

A Swiss village may have to evacuate for over a decade while authorities clear a huge World War Two arms dump.

The defence ministry concluded last year that the cache posed an "unacceptable" risk to the nearby people of Mitholz.

Now, authorities say residents may have to leave while they clear the site.

"Depending on how the work develops, residents should expect the evacuation to last up to more than 10 years," the ministry said.

Residents would have to approve the plan to leave the area. A public consultation is under way to see how best to proceed.

People who lived in the area where nuclear testing was done in the 30's & 40's still are not able to return to their ranches and they did not get a vote, they were evacuated by military and left in the nearest town to wait, being told it was temporary, but now their grandchildren are still waiting.

Instead of clearing it over 10 years  why not evacuate the town for a few days and bomb the site from the air?

Right, then where do the people go?

I assume the dump is far enough away that a targeted bunker buster that would only explode underground would do minimal damage to the village.

If it was that far away, why would they have to evacuate in the first place?

Because of the danger of dumb kids playing around there.
