Still Waters Posted February 27, 2020 #1 Share Posted February 27, 2020 A Swiss village may have to evacuate for over a decade while authorities clear a huge World War Two arms dump. The defence ministry concluded last year that the cache posed an "unacceptable" risk to the nearby people of Mitholz. Now, authorities say residents may have to leave while they clear the site. "Depending on how the work develops, residents should expect the evacuation to last up to more than 10 years," the ministry said. Residents would have to approve the plan to leave the area. A public consultation is under way to see how best to proceed. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-51657801

+OverSword Posted February 27, 2020 #4 Share Posted February 27, 2020 Instead of clearing it over 10 years why not evacuate the town for a few days and bomb the site from the air?

I assume the dump is far enough away that a targeted bunker buster that would only explode underground would do minimal damage to the village. If it was that far away, why would they have to evacuate in the first place?

Seems a good distance from the rest of the town.
