Mystery of lifespan gap between sexes solved?

Recommended Posts

"From humans to black-tailed prairie dogs, female mammals often outlive males – but for birds, the reverse is true.

"Now researchers say they have cracked the mystery, revealing that having two copies of the same sex chromosome is associated with having a longer lifespan, suggesting the second copy offers a protective effect.

"“These findings are a crucial step in uncovering the underlying mechanisms affecting longevity, which could point to pathways for extending life,” the authors write. “We can only hope that more answers are found in our lifetime.”"

...or it's simply because one of the sexes wears the other one down.

Older males are more expendable than older females in most animal species. Especially higher intelligence species. Older females help with rearing young. Older males are usually driven out as competition for younger males for mates and rank facilitates it. Once a male is past sexual and physical peak his usefulness diminishes whereas older females have mothering skills even if they aren't still producing. Its advantageous for orphaned young, larger groups and also food gathering as older females retain a larger knowledge of food sources. Makes sense to me why over millions of years species evolved to retain older females who lived longer and not older males.
