"When he was told by doctors that he would never walk again following major surgery on his spine, Liam Critchett initially believed them.

"Resigned to spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair, the then 12-year-old had to give up playing his beloved football and running around with his friends in the park.

"But the pysiotherapists assigned to helping Liam recover refused to give up on him, telling him constantly not to listen to the surgeons and that, with hard work and determination, he would one day walk again.

"And last year their prediction came true when Liam began taking his first few tentative steps."
