Secret tunnel found beneath train station

Archaeologists conducting excavations at a train station in Copenhagen, Denmark, have unearthed a mysterious tunnel dating back to the 1800s, reports Kasper Bruun Vindum Brandt for Danish broadcast station TV2 Lorry.

Found some 19 feet below Østerport Station, according to the Copenhagen Post, the wood-lined passageway is now under investigation by researchers at the Museum of Copenhagen.

“When you find such a tunnel, it gives a rush to the body,” archaeologist Christian Andreas Flensborg tells TV2 Lorry. “ ... You ask yourself how extensive these systems are and are there many more tunnels.”

So far, excavations have revealed almost ten feet of the narrow tunnel—and researchers think it could keep going.

There is an old village in France near where my mum was born, there is an old stone aviary there and beneath it is a tunnel. It is not accessible to the public and I do not know the full story,  apparently it goes to the next village. It dates back to the 18th hundreds. 

There is also a tunnel the resistance built, it was found a few years back when a  hole appeared in a field.  i went to see it with my dad, did not venture down there, mainly because my dad would not let me.

Opposite my old primary school in Camberwell where two old bunkers, as kids we would go down it, but it has now been covered over, health and sheepy reasons no doubt.

He's part of  the Illuminators and involved in many cover overs.

I haven't heard about this tunnel before, but based on the location I find that the idea of it being connected to the old defensive works very likely. Østerport where it was found literally translate as East Gate and was one of the three gates in the old city walls. It is also very close to Kastellet which was an important part of the fortifications and one of the very few parts still standing.

The place where the tunnel was found is to the right of the fortification.

Many places in Denmark still have many bunkers around, mostly from World War II. Some have been closed, but others are still in use for storage.

Today Kastellet houses the Defence Intelligence Service so maybe it was supposed to stay secret ?

Sadly the Carlsberg brewery is no longer in Copenhagen. Anyway it was on the opposite end of the city. I like the idea though.

Is the new brewery not in Danmark?  I assumed it would still be somewhere in København.

Usually tunnels of this dimension 3'x3' are used for underground utilities. Maybe in 1874 it was used for gas lines.
