Horsemeat seized amid criminal exploit fears

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Shipments of horsemeat masquerading as beef have been seized across Europe as criminals take advantage of closed borders and industry shutdowns to peddle fake products, experts have warned.

The disruption caused by coronavirus has led to a spike in food and agricultural fraud and there are fears the closure of meat processing plants will see pork and other animal products sold on the black market, by-passing safety checks.

There has also been a seizure by British customs of illegally imported smoked fish from Ghana.

The seizures have reinforced fears that criminal gangs have begun to target food supply chains disrupted by the pandemic.

People here will have to change their meat eating habits.

We export a lot of meat,

Quote

Beef accounts for the largest share of export revenue at 40%, followed closely by lamb and sheep at around 36%, with pork bringing in around 20%. The remaining revenue comes from the sale of other animal products (the less popular meat products that attract a low price here but a much higher price in other countries).

If we stop bringing meat from other countries, people will buy whats on offer here.

Things have changed due to this pandemic and I would not trust any meats coming from abroad now.

If it is not British meat, I do not buy it. People here have to start supporting our farmers and buy British. The farmers need us, but will go under if we keep buying foreign produce when British is on offer.

I bought some British strawberries the other day (tasted lovely), although the ones from Spain were a bigger box. If everyone bought British, we could have bigger British boxes. Ok, so we do not get sttawberries in winter, but thats not natural anyway.

sales of British meat have soared to China since the pandemic. it would seem Chinese want high quality traceable meat these days. especially pork.

So we should fork over more of our hard earned money to support business that can't stay competitive?

Careful, you'll have the resident ultra-right loonies branding you socialist scum next

Reminds me of this scene from Steptoe and Son when their horse died.  "Bung him in a tin."
