Anger in China at law ordering ‘cooling-off’ period before divorce

Quote

Chinese couples seeking a divorce must first complete a month-long “cooling-off” period according to a new law passed on Thursday that has stirred a national debate over state interference in private relationships.

In an effort to lower divorce rates, China’s legislature approved a law that requires couples filing for separation to wait 30 days before their request can be processed. The measure, which was previously a recommendation implemented in some provinces, was met with widespread opposition when lawmakers first sought feedback last year

In the meantime people unable to escape abusive spouses will end up beaten and dead.  I'll wait for someone to tell me that doesn't happen in socialist paradises.

True.

I was looking at it as comedy, but yeah there is definitely harmful implications to doing things like that. As you mentioned.

In the 80's that was still a thing in the U.S. depending on the state.  If no lawyers and no children were involved in New Mexico you could get the paperwork filled out and there was a 2 week wait.  If children were involved then lawyers had to be involved.  And that delayed everything more than a month.

I have known a couple of people who married, got divorced in less than a year, then remarried.  One couple stayed married and it has been 3 years, but the other divorced again.  A divorce lawyers dream couple.

I don't know how it is in China but here you don't have to stay with an abusive spouse while waiting to get a divorce.

It happened many, many times in New Jersey.
