A rare 17th century penny struck in County Antrim has broken an auction record after selling for £6,200.

The penny from Carrickfergus had been expected to fetch £240 to £300, but the price rocketed.

The coin sold for more than 20 times its estimate in a live online auction of historical medals.

International coins, medals, banknotes and jewellery specialist Dix Noonan Webb (DNW) said it had set a worldwide auction record.

The buyer was a collector from the United States.

What's going on, these trade tokens never fetch this type of money, Birmingham workhouse tokens are a common metal detector find in and around Birmingham.

Yes, two people with more money than sense can escalate prices but looking at the sales there appears to be a trend with these tokens, i've found from every period, Celtic, Roman, Saxon, Viking, Medieval and so on but some of the most fun i've had was doing the Georgian and Victorian inner city parks over 40 years ago, any coins less than V,good were sold as scrap, i would take large sweet jars full of Halfcrowns, Florins, Shillings and sixpences to be weighed in.
