Dame Vera Lynn, the Forces' Sweetheart whose songs helped raise morale in World War Two, has died aged 103.

The singer's family confirmed she died on Thursday morning surrounded by her close relatives.

"The family are deeply saddened to announce the passing of one of Britain's best-loved entertainers at the age of 103," a statement said.

Dame Vera was best known for performing for the troops during WW2 in countries including India and Egypt.

Her family said information on a memorial will be announced at a later date.

Yes sad news indeed. Good innings tho'.

They'd better not put up a statue to her though because just like Churchill she never had a good word to say about those Nazi chaps.

Born in 1917? So she was in her twenties at the time she had her greatest hits? You kind of imagine her as always being at least 60. Like Winston Churchill* and the Queen Mother, you kind of always imagine them to be the age you know them as.

* sorry if that triggered anybody

Just think of all those brave lads during the war who tuned in to hear Vera Lynn's comforting voice, and died in the war.  She's probably up there right now singing 'We'll meet again'.  They've been waiting a mighty long time to thank her.

RIP Dame Vera Lynn

From 1936.
