£500 vouchers considered for all UK adults

Radical plans to give all adults £500 and children £250 in vouchers to spend in sectors of the economy worst hit by the Covid-19 crisis are being considered by the Treasury.

The proposals, drawn up by the Resolution Foundation think tank, which has had recent talks with the Treasury about its ideas, are aimed at kickstarting economic recovery by triggering a highly targeted surge in spending. Under the plans the vouchers could only be spent in certain sectors, such as hospitality and “face to face” retail, as opposed to online.

The proposals are similar to successful schemes already used in China, Taiwan and Malta. In April, the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the Covid-19 outbreak is believed to have started, issued 500 million yuan (£57m) in consumption vouchers for use in restaurants, shopping malls, convenience stores, and cultural, sports and tourist venues.

Why? people have been unable to spend their money due to shops being locked down etc...my dad who is a pensioner hasn't been out and as saved £650. The treasury needs to step away from this idea. the vast majority of people have money to spend.

Mmmm, but on the other hand people who work in shops, pubs etc, any aspect of the tourist industry, or in the industries that supply them, won't have been making any money at all will they. And they still have non-optional things such as bills for electric, gas etc, rent, tax etc, to pay. Not to mention that they do have to occasionally purchase things such as food

Why would they describe it as radical? It makes extremely good sense. Many could use the extra cash, as could the places the money is spent at.

Its a good way to kick-start demand to make sure at the end of the year our GDP is where it should be as if coronavirus had never happened.

I think it should be for haircuts, clothing, consumer electronics, household goods, restaurants, pubs, etc. No need to boost the supermarkets as they have done normal.

Its about demand Mr Steve.

With the Boris plan to build infrastructure that boosts demand but takes years to complete and doesnt drop money into those businesses who need it the most right now.

The Govts just been paying 80% of people wages for millions of people. 9.3Million on furlough, we've had the....Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, Self-Employment Income Support Scheme, 2.6million people. VAT payments deferral scheme.

And this think tank want the Govt to spend a further £30bn on handing out vouchers for leisure and hospitality.

the Socialists are loving this, millions dependant on the state. most don't want it to end.

So are you saying those things are a good thing or a bad thing? If this was the only way the Government could have tackled the Covid, should they have left all the people they were putting out of work out to dry? Should the Government have taken some other approach that wouldn't have put all these people out of work and thus dependent on the State?

It would save looters having to drive through shop windows and nick wide screen TV's, they would be able to buy one. 

In its favor the idea might increase confidence among consumers and drive a stronger bounce back of the economy and cheaper than paying out huge amounts of benefits. But estimating this in advance has to be just about impossible.   

I guess if it is tried then the government cannot be accused of not considering radical policy.

I`m sorry guys but I think £500 per adult, and £250 per child, is actually good economics.

Its not good during normal times, but its good to get the economy woken up, create jobs, and get money flowing into businesses that really need it after the lockdown.

I`m personally looking forward to spending my £500 at the `gentlemen`s club` on some immoral women lol.
