A black bear is gaining national attention for his summer walkabout that has taken him from Wisconsin to Illinois, perhaps in search of a mate.

The bear, named "Bruno," crossed state lines and is still roaming, building a social media following along the way.A Facebook group, “Keeping Bruno Safe,” was created June 19 and has more than 46,000 members.

The bear has traveled about 400 miles and has recently been spotted in Missouri, according to several reports.

Male bears have a penchant for wandering, maturing cubs often force out of territories claimed by older males, in search of mates, or just off on a lark, for all we know. One wandered onto the grounds of a hospital I worked at in downtown Knoxville and was corner up a tree and darted by animal control officers.
