A bus driver in France has been left brain dead after reportedly being attacked by passengers who refused to wear face masks.

The driver in the city of Bayonne refused to allow a number of people to board because they had no tickets and no masks, AFP reported.

The victim, in his 50s, sustained serious head injuries after he was punched repeatedly on Sunday evening.

It was reported that one of the group had attempted to board the bus with a dog.

In another report they don't mention tickets.

The face masks issue still played a big part in what happened to the poor driver.

Let the drivers wear and be trained in the use of a handgun and it will become the thugs who attack him that become irrelevant.  Shoot them dead when they try to beat someone to death.

Philippe Monguillot, aged 59, had been left brain dead after the assault in the south-western city of Bayonne.

"We decided to let him go," his daughter Marie told AFP news agency, saying doctors had agreed.

Two men in their 20s were arrested and charged with attempted murder after the assault late on Sunday.

Two other men were charged with failing to help a person in danger while a fifth man was charged with attempting to hide a suspect.

This is really sad. I cannot understand what drives some people to behave so stupidly and irresponsibly. There was absolutely no need to respond with such violence. Our transit drivers here are now protected from contact with passengers and entry into buses and streetcars is done on the honour system. Given how dangerously some people react to the new guidelines for public safety, such precautions are more necessary than ever.
