There's a very good chance this is exactly what it is and the first thing that came to mind. Drive by a clearing in a large forest on the side of a highway and this is what you'll see. In fact what we call a Tornado would be laughed at by Americans as they are just small and happen for a few seconds or so. We do get them quite often, in fact I read we have more Tornados than the US do, but that they are so small they don't often get noticed. We have had some terrific blustery days of late. Wind certainly seems the most plausible explanation to me. Wind is especially effective after a heavy rain when the soil is waterlogged, soft, and does not offer its normal support to the roots. We would not laugh at your tornadoes. Yeah, we just traversed time and space, but instead of landing in a clearing, we're going to bash down trees. I saw a huge circle of flattened trees in The Cherokee National Forest like this, once, with much larger trees snapped like matchsticks. Downburst A downburst is a strong ground-level wind system that emanates from a point source above and blows radially, that is, in straight lines in all directions from the point of contact at ground level. Often producing damaging winds, it may be confused with a tornado, where high-velocity winds circle a central area, and air moves inward and upward; by contrast, in a downburst, winds are directed downward and then outward from the surface landing point.
