Eldorado Posted July 20, 2020 #1 Share Posted July 20, 2020 (edited) "A UFO filmed flying over a Co Down village was not a weather balloon, the Met Office has said. "A woman who captured footage of the object over Annalong on July 8 passed it to the Northern Ireland UFO Society (NIUFOS), which is investigating the sighting. "The round and grey UFO moved through the sky from north to south at a time when the wind in the area was blowing from the east, suggesting it could not have been a weather balloon." +Desertrat56 Posted July 20, 2020 #2 Share Posted July 20, 2020 Was she on a ship? What was that pole that kept getting in the video? And the object looked too far away to determine if it was not a helicopter. Cell phone footage is not useful in these cases.
Essan Posted July 21, 2020 #3 Share Posted July 21, 2020 (edited) That footage couldn't have been less useful if it has been shot inside a coal bunker at night with all the lights out whist the mobile phone was wrapped in a blanket. No context, nothing in focus, no indication of size or distance; not even possible to determine whether it was the spot moving or the person supposedly filming it. +DieChecker Posted July 22, 2020 #6 Share Posted July 22, 2020 Id not even call the wind direction as evidence. Because the wind directoon at ground level can be very different from the wind direction even 30 meters (100 feet) up. Cant tell anything about the object. Could be just a regular balloon IMHO. Cell phone cameras are crap at any real distance. Its either huge, and far away, or basket sized and relatively close.
+Hammerclaw Posted July 24, 2020 #7 Share Posted July 24, 2020 Looked like a bird 'till distorted by zoom. Probably a big white-tailed sea eagle.

ChrLzs Posted July 25, 2020 #10 Share Posted July 25, 2020 Just a passing comment or two on how idiotic the responses can be from those who should know better..... 1. Did the Met Office check the wind direction at all heights? Just because the prevailing winds at one level are in one direction, does not mean they are the same all the way up.. and of course the observers angle of view may affect the perception of direction. 2. Is the MO the only agency that uses balloons? Other agencies release balloons, and the Met Office doesn't speak for all.. They would be better off going to whatever is the agency in charge of all air traffic in the region. Given the low levels of that traffic at the moment, agencies doing atmospheric research are probably releasing more balloons than normal... Essan Posted July 25, 2020 #11 Share Posted July 25, 2020 I suspect someone just rang the MetO to ask if they had released a weather balloon in the vicinity and were told no. But there's nothing in the video to suggest that's what it is anyway.
tortugabob Posted July 26, 2020 #12 Share Posted July 26, 2020 The wind can be blowing in different directions at different altitudes. This is a balloon. Nothing to see here people. Move along.
