You are looking at it from a historical pov, with the aid of hindsight. Though it does seem unlikely, you don't really have that with Trump yet.

Hitler didn't always behave like the Hitler of history or any other dictator either, until he did. With hindsight it becomes easy to look back and see it for what it was all along. While the "Hitler" tag seems unnecessary, in many ways Trump most definitely does show some of the preferences of other dictators.

Though it's unlikely he will be another Mussolini as the checks and balances in the political system will probably prevent it. It's more likely he is just someone who inherited a fortune and without any political acumen is trying to run the country the way he would run a real estate business. It's like the US is being lead by a less intellectual version of "Fat Tony" Soprano.

He is only a symptom of a broken system and his path was made easy by the propaganda war on the left that the US has embraced since WW2 (reds under the bed and all that). There is no functional political left in the US now, the spectrum starts at the right and finishes at the extreme far right. The destruction of the left that people like Mussolini and Hitler engaged in (sometimes literally), has already been done in the US. Trump has shown how easily it can happen, the worry is that there might be another would be dictator out there, only one who is competent.
