Hong Kong postpones elections for a year

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

The Hong Kong government has postponed September's parliamentary elections by a year, saying it is necessary amid a rise in coronavirus infections.

Hong Kong is currently experiencing a spike in Covid-19 infections, and reported 121 new cases on Friday.

However, the opposition has accused the government of using the pandemic as a pretext to stop people from voting.

Many nations have postponed elections due to Covid, so that in and of itself isn't too crazy (thought postponement for an entire year does seem pretty excessive and sketchy, that length of time is only for corrupt reasons)

But what's really concerning is the large amount of pro-dem candidates who are now getting "disqualified" from running. One dude got disqualified simply for saying the security Law is Draconian. Shows how fair these elections are going to be I guess.

After the Security Law that China forced on Hong Kong they have been doing a major crackdown on Pro-democracy candidates.

The postponement will give prominent opposition leaders time to die of natural causes.

More like "suicide". Ever since the protest started their have been alot of "suicides" of young protesters.

It became so much of a thing that protesters started yelling their names and that they are happy and will not commit suicide whenever they get arrested and taken away by cops so that hopefully one of the onlookers pic it up on video.

It's really messed up.

Well, Well, postpone elections for CCP, not for Corona.

Indeed, lots of suspicious suicides are confirmed in Hong-Kong.

Japan's bipartisan legislator made a statement about Hong Kong.

"China is a large political council and a dark nation" Urgent statement over Hong Kong bipartisan parliamentary statement "It is not domestic interference! Protecting the freedom of Hong Kong citizens"

relevant to this thread

In Hong Kong, the parliamentary elections scheduled for the fall have been postponed for one year and democratic candidates are being cancelled.

Shiori Yamao, Co-Representative: "We should seek the restoration of the qualifications of candidates and hold elections as soon as possible."

Also good job Japan for this:

The statement also states that Japan will not respond to the investigation assistance from the Chinese and Hong Kong governments under the National Security Act, the extension of the period of stay without visa to protect Hong Kong residents in Japan, and the flexible visa policy. Seeking operation, the members of the Parliament visited the Prime Minister's residence and made an offer.
