These men volunteered for service and were being trained to do a job. Accidents kill service members every year. Well flight was in its infancy back in those days, and we didn't exactly have a ton of experienced pilots, so 'shoving country boys in the cockpit and hoping for the best' was essentially the very best we could do given the urgency of the situation at hand.
