Alchopwn Posted August 10, 2020 #51 Share Posted August 10, 2020 Someone got the date wrong. The 75th Anniversary of Hiroshima was on the 6th August, not the 5th. Typical M.E. organization. They will probably blame the international date line or something.

But I find it pretty sobering that the explosion appears to have had about a tenth of the explosive power of each of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.

You should try getting a Lebanese travel agent off their ****. The whole country is so badly organized that they let Iranian Terrorists run everything because they were too lazy, and they STILL couldn't organize a real nuke. The PLO has a LOT to answer for when it destabalised Lebannon back in the 70's and 80's, leading to the Syrian intervention, and forty years of occupation by Syria, and the rise of Hezbollah, massive political instability, and the increasing Iranian involvement. Eldorado Posted October 5, 2020 #57 Share Posted October 5, 2020 The blast that devastated large parts of Beirut in August was one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions in history, experts say. The Sheffield University, UK, team says a best estimate for the yield is 500 tons of TNT equivalent, with a reasonable upper limit of 1.1 kilotons. This puts it at around one-twentieth of the size of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, in 1945. The team mapped how the shockwave propagated through the city. RoofGardener Posted October 13, 2020 #59 Share Posted October 13, 2020 They're not having much luck in Beirut's port. There has just been a huge fire there , which started in a warehouse storing cooking oil, and spread to an adjacent Tyre store. You couldn't make this stuff up ! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-54100251 The fire also took out a warehouse full of Red Cross food parcels. 1
Eldorado Posted December 10, 2020 #60 Share Posted December 10, 2020 Lebanon's caretaker prime minister and three former ministers have been charged over the massive port explosion in Beirut in August, the country's official news agency has said. Judge Fadi Sawwan filed the charges against Hassan Diab and former finance minister Ali Hassan Khalil, as well as Ghazi Zeiter and Youssef Fenianos, both former ministers of public works. All four were charged with negligence leading to deaths over the August 4 explosion at Beirut port, which killed more than 200 people and injured thousands. Some 300,000 people were left homeless. +and-then Posted December 10, 2020 #61 Share Posted December 10, 2020 That tragedy was completely avoidable. I really hope it causes other ports to take safety measures.
