Sir Ed Davey Elected Liberal Democrat Leader

Still Waters

Recommended Posts

Sir Ed Davey has been elected as the fifth Liberal Democrat leader in as many years.

Davey overwhelmingly beat the challenge of Layla Moran to succeed Jo Swinson as party leader after Swinson dramatically lost her East Dunbartonshire seat in last December’s election.

The result was announced at a virtual event in central London due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

Davey, who was already acting leader, won 42,756 votes, comfortably beating Moran, who garnered 24,564 on a turnout of 57.6%.

The Liberal Democrats won just 11 seats last year. An internal inquiry into the party’s poor performance likened the campaign to a “high-speed car crash”, and the new leader will be aiming to turn the party’s fortunes around.

It was pretty obvious why they did so badly to everyone except themselves.

Firstly people like attractive well-kept politicians. With Jo Swinson her bad teeth and general unkept appearance evoked a yuck response in many people. I bet she smelt bad as well. And if not then thats an assumption many people would have made looking at her, I know I did. It tends to go hand in hand with poor personal hygiene.

Secondly the policy manifesto of the Liberal Democrats is bad. They planned to generate 80% of our electricity from renewables by 2030 and the only way of doing that would be closing down our 1000`s of oil and gas fired power plants. Thats a lot of unemployment and a high bill for the tax payer to pay in 11 years building clean power generation. They were heavily pro-immigration, pro-EU, wanted to get rid of our nuclear deterrent, and were far to interested in playing to minority votes instead of targeting the wider population.

Thirdly, and this is about the EU. Everyone in Britain was aware of many of our MPs trying to undue Brexit, trying to subvert the democratic will of the people from a referendum, trying to get a fresh referendum, trying to tell us we voted to leave with a deal when we voted to leave, and even collaborating with the EU to try and stop us leaving. We all know what went on regardless of whether we wanted Britain to leave or remain. Yet Jo Swinson frequently appeared on the TV claiming her party wasn`t subverting democracy (which it was) and if that lying wasn`t blatantly obvious enough she was also accusing the other parties of doing it like she was in la la land.

Their wipe-out was fully deserved and totally self-inflicted. The US Democrats are the next for a shock. They haven`t learned yet that most of the American population wont be manipulated and will react badly to a party that tries it on.

What a stupid and nasty thing to say. Your problem with Jo is in your head.

By "bad teeth" do you mean the slight gap in her 2 front teeth?

Jo Swinson is always immaculately turned out, unlike our current Prime Minister.

Perhaps if they (and Labour) had paid some attention to this :-

No, they decided to go in the polar opposite direction to the English voters. Did they really need an inquiry? Was it really that difficult to work out?

Really? That's the explanation you're going for when people elected this guy?

Overall, I think you're completely missing the Lib Dems goal.

No one, including them, expects them to win the election. They're going for the role of kingmaker again by picking up a small number of key areas. In which case, niche interests are exactly what to target.

Beat me to it...

And how is this man our representative on the world stage? He looks like he's on day release...

As for why he'd say that, most of his posts can be chalked up to being a nasty spiteful little troll who likes to bring others down to his level. Presumably because he's failed to achieve what they have in life. I suggest only engaging with him if you find it funny. Like a sad clown.

I think one problem for Lib Dems was their delight at adopting rouge MP's from other parties last year. It looked like the brand was being diluted by others with long held allegiances elsewhere.

They should have insisted all new defecting MP's held a by-election as a Lib Dem.

Not a good look just before an election and combined with desperate policy they received what they deserved.

Rouge MP's?

MP's with cosmetically rosy cheeks? :unsure2:

Sorry... I just had to be a smartass!

"Rogue" has to be one of the most commonly misspelt - or misspelled if you prefer it - words in the English language

Now they've got a new leader perhaps it would be a good time (and more honest) to drop the word 'Democrats' from their title.

The `Liberal Undemocrats` party.

Putting every minor voting segment first, instead of representing the majority!

Hell, we might as well rename all of them:

Labour: PLEASE just vote for us. We might do better!

Conservatives: Vote for us so we can make your life worse peasant.

Green: Never gonna get in so what the hell free everything for everyone (if you're vegan)

Lib dems: Look, look, over here we still exist! Please look...

UKIP: We probably don't like you.

BNP: Ug look different. Me not like Ug.

SNP: FREEEEEEDOOOOOOM!!!!! But can we keep the pound?

Sinn Fein: We hate the b******* below

DUP: We hate the b******* above.

Plaid Cymry: Literally no idea. Something about daffodils?

Any I've missed?

Labour: Redistribution! Only think about the immediate consequences, ignore the fact that it levies higher costs on businesses driving them out of price sensitive markets unless they move a large chunk of their operations to China or India. No, no, no, please dont look at how our policies expand the working class instead of lifting people out of poverty. We must stay in the EU at any cost! Why? A Britain cannot compete outside the EU while maintaining all its current socialism. Dont worry about economic growth either, there are millions of foreigners looking for a new home to create it.

Conservatives: Business first! The poor are supposed to be poor, and we will make them poorer to reduce the size of the working class. Yes vote for us and if you are working class but skilled you will be moved up while your comrades are moved down. Its the natural order of things, people arent equals, they should each know their position in society and be paid accordingly. Did we mention we like to play with ships in the bath? Lets leave the EU and make Britain great again!

Green: Panic! The world is going to end! The end is nigh! We must go super green and lets pretend you arent going to be paying for that with higher taxes and unemployment.

Lib Dems: Vote for us! We will adopt every weird and wacky policy going because the Labour and Conservative parties have pushed us to the fringes of politics. We used to be the official opposition centuries ago you know! But rather than give the majority what they want we stay in the fringes never to form a government off our own backs again.

UKIP: Just wait a second while I finish playing with my ships in the bath tub. We can be great again you know? Are we racist? Well some of us are. Are we the BNP in disguise? No, of course not, lets pretend our policies arent near enough identical to theirs.

BNP: Just wait a second while I finish playing with my ships in the bath tub. We can be great again you know? Are we racist? Well some of us are. Are we just UKIP? Well we thought we were but it seems we are different because we had a holocaust denier (allegedly) as our leader. Sigh, the media will never let us forget that. I know what, lets all secretly join UKIP and dont tell them we are also in the BNP.

SNP: England kicked our butts over several centuries. Even worse they are protestants (gasps of horror!). We must declare our independence at any cost. Hopefully if the Labour and Lib Dems do a bad job in Scotland we can persuade enough of our people to vote for our freedom and of course by selling them a dream of a wealthy future based on the North Sea Oil which we dont actually own.

Sinn Fein: Do we really have to do this the peaceful way? Lets pretend we dont have a secret stockpile hidden.

DUP: Vote for DUP! Vote to stay in the UK! Now join us as we go troll Sinn Fein by dressing in orange and go march down the road.

Plaid Cymru: Vote for us and we will put all the road signs in Welsh! Whats that? But only 5000 of us speak Welsh? Where is your national pride sonny!

You missed the SWP - Socialist Workers Party.

There are what UKIP and BNP are to the Conservative Party, but to the Labour Party. They are socialism on steroids.
