Joe Biden makes bizarre false claim that a black man invented the light bulb, 'not a white guy named Edison'

'Why in God's name don't we teach history in history classes,' he questions. 'A black man invested the light bulb not a white guy named Edison.

From what we know, it was likely neither one. More likely Joseph Swan or Humphrey Davy deserve more credit. Latimer did improve upon the design.

Invested the lightbulb? Go home Joe,

"Invested" was from the Daily Mail reporter.  It's been fixed.

Edison both invented the light bulb, and invested in it :D

The claim that he didn't invent the lightbulb, and it was instead invented by Lewis Latimer, is false.

If Donald Trump had made this statement, CNN would be all over him. But when Biden says it.... tumbleweed.

This guy?

Lewis Howard Latimer (September 4, 1848 – December 11, 1928) was an American inventor and patent draftsman for the patents of the light bulb and telephone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Howard_Latimer

The article explains that he was the draftsman who executed to drawings for those items, not that he was the inventor of those items.

Invested the lightbulb? I think the link got it wrong. He definitely said invented

When I was in X-Ray school I saw a few lightbulbs that people had, er... invested in places you couldn't imagine :w00t:

Look based on everything we know about what kind of man Edison was, the only thing we can say for sure is whoever invented it, Edison probably snatched the idea.

If trump would have said it , all his supporters would either be saying   1. he didn't say it , false news ,   or 2 . defending it.:D

You are certainly right, Edison did invent the light bulb. But he could not make one that would last more than about 15 hours. Lewis Latimer, did however improve the light bulb which allowed it to last much much longer by using a carbonized wooden filament, he also made other refinements that made it more affordable.

Y'know,

I usually don't go into politics, but he's nuts. Living in a basement does that to you I guess

I don't get the issue.  It's pretty clear he was talking about Lewis Latimer.  He could be a UM poster seeing how we are sitting here arguing over the details of if he should be given credit or not.

The theory of “Multiple Independent Discovery” (or even ‘simultaneous invention’) is where several separate parties come up with the same invention.  There is a long list.  If you go down to the 19th Century, you’ll see the light bulb is there.  Another crinkle that the article doesn’t really expand on much are lost discoveries.  Inventions that were known to the ancients but have been lost over time.  Like the Heron Engine, Baghdad Battery, Antikythera Mechanism, and even the Dendera Light.

Latimer was very talented.  He improved on the light bulb, just as Ford improved on the invention of the wheel.  Edison hired Latimer for his skill at drafting and patent law.  Edison supplied the vision and Latimer was just one of many that made it into reality.  His achievements and legacy stand on their own.  He just didn’t invent the light bulb.  He is definitely one that a statue should be erected (if one isn’t already).

biden is virtue signaling,  he could have picked a different example,  the one that everyone uses worldwide, and we can't imagine our life without it, and its inventor isn't disputed, as with a light bulb, but virtue signalers do not  bother.

*cough* actually.. no.. I see you do not know your english history.. :D

Humphrey Davy was the first to investigate using electricity for creating lighting.. (he was a pom :D like you) ... it was another pom Warren de La Rue which was the first to create a light bulb..  but he had a problem creating a vaccum and was using to platinium for the filament about 40 years before Edison tried..

Jospeh Swan was the first to use carbon (in 1878) yet another Pom.. but he used thick carbon..

Now Edison was the first to use thin carbon and to create a successful vacuum.. so he improved others work.. but was not the one to invent it.. so was successfully able to patient a commercial verson of the light bulb..

We did this in 2nd year high school science.. and we all thought that it was Edison as well.. our Science Teacher was a Pom (and decendent of La Rue) and made a bet that if he could show that it was not edison we had to do all our home work for the year without fail.. if he couldnt.. we would not get home work at all for that year.. so we being the smug little cocksure b*****s we were.. took him on :D

Biden trying to play to the black vote.

Why isn`t he trying to play to the whole populations vote rather then small voting segments? What can he do for the average American that is 70% of the population? Not a lot apparently, and hence one of the many reasons (and there are many) that he will lose.

His policy manifesto targets ethnic minorities, religious minorities, LGBTQ, and the poor. No where is average Jo and Joanne Bloggs represented. His scope is far too restricted. His democrat parties level of corruption and subversion of democracy is far worse.

Biden is a dodo even before voting has opened.
