Oregon hit by unprecedented wildfires

Recommended Posts

Eldorado

"The US state of Oregon is battling record-breaking wildfires, which have destroyed at least five towns.

"Three deaths in Oregon have been blamed on the wildfires, with another in neighbouring Washington state, where blazes are also burning.

"In California, three people died in a wildfire that has forced thousands from their homes, authorities say."

These are pictures of San Francisco taken yesterday. The sky is orange and smoke filled. Some are of the Golden Gate Bridge.

These show Oregon. The pictures are not photoshopped and are taken in the morning or at noon. Look at the time stamp.

"The smoke particles from the fires allow sunlight's longer wavelength colors like red and orange to get through while blocking the shorter wavelengths of yellow, blue and green," NASA said. "Those longer wavelengths give the sky a red or orange tinted appearance. Similarly, during sunrise and sunset times when the sun is near the horizon, sunlight has to travel through more of Earth's atmosphere to get to you. The additional atmosphere filters out the shorter wavelengths and allows the longer wavelengths to get through, providing reds and oranges during those times."

Police suspect 'human element' to devastating Oregon fire

Investigators say one of the dozens of fires devastating the US might have been lit deliberately.

I found this site last night and it's been updating. It's a good read.

I also saw where investigators were looking into if one of the fires had been intentionally set. There are a lot of rumors flying that aren't true.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/10/us/fires-oregon-california-wa-state.html

Officials dealing with mass fires on the West Coast have been forced to counter social media rumors that the blazes were set by activists.

In Medford, Ore., which saw a blaze that devastated the nearby communities of Phoenix and Talent, the Police Department reported hearing throughout Wednesday rumors that officers had arrested either leftist antifa or right-wing Proud Boys activists for arson. The department made its own Facebook post to say that neither story was true, nor was a fake graphic associated with the rumors, nor were reports of “gatherings of Antifa.”

Still, with no evidence, other social media posts repeatedly pointed suspicion toward antifa — a loosely coordinated group of activists involved in protests in places like Portland, Ore.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that 911 dispatchers were being overrun with requests for information about an untrue rumor that antifa members were arrested for setting fires. The office said the rumors are making a difficult situation even harder. “Do your part, STOP. SPREADING. RUMORS!” the office said in a Facebook post.

In Oregon, which has suffered catastrophic fires in the last few days, officials haven’t even seen any evidence of such a campaign at the state or local level, said Joy Krawczyk, a spokeswoman with the Oregon Department of Forestry. She said many fires remain under investigation.

“We’re not seeing any indications of a mass politically-influenced arson campaign,” Ms. Krawczyk said.

A friend of mine and his wife, people who retired from the university last spring, moved to Oregon.  The recent fires burned them out.  House and all out-buildings gone.  They lost everything.  They're going to try to rebuild.  Hoping to get up something they can live in before cold weather gets here.

I saw the reports yesterday on our news that the smoke has traveled the jet stream and is now making the sky hazy here over Pennsylvania. They said it's at an altitude of 25,000 ft so it doesn't affect our air quality.

There has been some containment but the weather is turning again, worrying officials. Oregon still has rumor issues. They are asking the public to trust them.
