So, under that logic, Mars is a planet of the United States, as well as the earth's moon.

Venus is the Morning Star, an important and beloved symbol in Slavic culture. In that context, Venus is Slavic (thus, of course, Russian too) planet in the sense of being cherished by Slavs - and probably any other culture in the world.

I don't think "owning" planets can be presented in a way that doesn't sound irrational at best.

Claiming planets will lead to bitter wars. It is all nonsense we are in this together. Except for the communists

People are taking this remark far too seriously and without looking at the context it was made.

He was talking about the planned Venera-D mission to Venus and a further mission that Russia will carry out after that. He was pointing out that all of the exploration done on the surface of Mars was done by Russia. What he actually said was, "we think that Venus is a Russian planet and we shouldn't lag behind".

And just how much are Russia genuinely claiming Venus? Well the fact that Venera-D is a joint Russian/US mission should tell you all you need to know.

His statement was no more claiming Venus for Russia than Armstrong placing the Stars and Stripes on the Sea of Tranquillity means that the USA claiming the Moon. In both cases it was an expression of national pride, nothing more, nothing less.

If you want a genuine case of a politician illegally attempting to claim a celestial body as the property of a single nation may I point you in the direction of Newt Gingrich who, in 2012, suggested that, if he became President, the Moon would become the 51st state of America
