Facebook may quit Europe

“In the event that [Facebook] were subject to a complete suspension of the transfer of users’ data to the US,” Yvonne Cunnane argued, “it is not clear … how, in those circumstances, it could continue to provide the Facebook and Instagram services in the EU.”

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/sep/22/facebook-says-it-may-quit-europe-over-ban-on-sharing-data-with-us

so the EU ruled that data transferred to the US is not sufficiently protected from US snooping:

'That court found in 2015 that, because of the existence of Prism, the “Safe Harbour” agreement, which allowed US companies to transfer the data of EU citizens back home, was invalid.'

This seems on face value to be the same argument used by the US government to against tiktok et al.

Personally I would not lose any sleep over Facebook leaving the EU.

But is it right to claim it can't operate without sharing data with the US?

Do we really care that the data we provide to Facebook et al makes it way to the US or elsewhere, after all if we really cared would we put it on their ion the first place?

Ahh, the people of the world come together over the internet. Then people of the world get disconnected again by paranoia.

I don't know how everybody else uses Facebook but when I put information on Facebook it's not going to be something I would care if any government knew about it.

Sounds to me like an attempt at blackmail. Mr. Facebook Man clearly sees his lucrative deal with the U.S. Intelligence Services as under threat.

Still, gives me another excuse for this, which is always a laugh.

First I heard of this but, no. Zuckerberg isn't related to the Rockefellers.

It's the first I've heard of it too, but it only took me about 30 seconds to debunk it.

I forgive you, because you're new to UM.  You haven't realised yet, that everything I say is gospel.

An understandable mistake for a newbie.

There are some Vanderbilts I'm aware of because of Anderson. I'm not sure about others.

Contemporary descendants include journalist Anderson Cooper, actor Timothy Olyphant, musician John P. Hammond and screenwriter James Vanderbilt.
