Thailand resort sues man over negative review

Authorities in Thailand say an American man has been sued by an island resort over a negative TripAdvisor review.

He could now face up to two years in prison if found guilty, with Colonel Thanapon Taemsara of Koh Chang police telling AFP: "The Sea View Resort owner filed a complaint that the defendant had posted unfair reviews on his hotel on the Tripadvisor website."

The Sea View Resort, on Koh Chang island, said legal action had been taken after Wesley Barnes, who works in Thailand, wrote multiple reviews on various sites over the past few weeks.

Message from Tripadvisor:
Due to a recent event that has attracted media attention and has caused an influx of review submissions that do not describe a first-hand experience, we have temporarily suspended publishing new reviews for this listing. If you’ve had a firsthand experience at this property, please check back soon - we’re looking forward to receiving your review!

And for all the false positive review that resorts do all the time?

From what I read, it was more like harassment by the American man.  Multiple reviews are not necessary.

Update:

Thai hotel to drop charges against guest facing jail for bad reviews

Quote

A hotel in Thailand agreed on Friday to drop charges against an American guest who faces up to five years in jail for posting negative reviews as long as he issues a public apology for his comments.

The hotel wants Barnes to send statements to media, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the U.S. Embassy and the Tripadvisor website this month, apologising and explaining that his poor reviews were written in anger.

The hotel said Barnes had agreed. He told Reuters he would be issuing a statement.

"I'm sending an email to many media outlets,” Barnes told Reuters. He declined to elaborate.

If the guy had a bad experience at the hotel and left a complaint that's one thing. But multiple posts? that's too far. And given they tried to reach out to him to settle the matter before taking action shows this all could have been avoided. I actually don't feel bad for the guy.

He should have left the country first.  Not all nations have free speech.
