Small pox is a disease called variola. What Washington did was a technique that was called variolation, from the name of the disease.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variolation

A controlled and limited transfer of the pathogen was used. The idea of variolaton has also been considered with COVID-19 since at least June.

I think masks.  .  and distancing ...     limit transfer of the pathogen  .. resulting in milder cases.

Here is one of the articles about the cruise ships and possibly variolation associated with COVID-19.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/08/health/covid-masks-immunity.html

Quote

As the world awaits the arrival of a safe and effective coronavirus vaccine, a team of researchers has come forward with a provocative new theory: that masks might help to crudely immunize some people against the virus.

The unproven idea, described in a commentary published Tuesday in the New England Journal of Medicine, is inspired by the age-old concept of variolation, the deliberate exposure to a pathogen to generate a protective immune response. First tried against smallpox, the risky practice eventually fell out of favor, but paved the way for the rise of modern vaccines.

Imagine them with real power.  They make clear every day what they'd really like to do to his supporters JUST because they are his supporters.  When someone tells you they want to crush what you believe... listen to them because they WILL, if they gain the power.

It's no coincidence we see an example so shortly after you brought it up. The fact is these things are said quite frequently. I've seen a number of similar statements this year. It's pretty commonplace within the left wing particularly among the socialist and their Ché wearing lemmings.

I see you have no defense for your ignorant lie about the lethality of COVID-19.

You did that for me when you gave a fatality statistic and then immediately admitted it is likely bogus.

I did forget to thank you, though.

So, thanks for that.

I see you have lied again. The statistics are valid. You do nothing but lie.

We just expect some posters to purposely post lies.

The CFR of the common flu is around 0.1%. The CFR of COVID-19 is around 2.8% but may go down.  That makes it far deadlier than the common flu.

The major outbreaks of COVID-19 have been in the areas first hit by the disease and afterward and now are all in places where the state government has avoided pushing the recommendations of the health experts.

Everything I posted is backed up by actual evidence. You lie.

Nothing I posted is "likely bogus" but you will lie about anything.

CFR statistics that need to be constantly revised downward aren't "valid" for anything but propaganda and heavy-handed control of the populace.

Which is probably what you meant.

For everyone else, it's just more 'garbage out' from you.

And it stinks.

It's actually called variolation.

Clearly, you are completely ignorant about CFRs.

They are not "constantly revised downward". The 2.8% CFR has been valid for quite some time.

The CFR is dependent on a number of factors including time and place.

You should learn how CFRs are computed before you spout ridiculous statements based on your personal ignorance of the subject.

Your blubbering about  "propaganda and heavy-handed control of the populace" is just more evidence of your complete ignorance on this subject.

That is what I stated. I suppose I was not clear enough.

There was a big concern that the rioters would cause a large spike in cases because of the massing of people. But it didn't and these articles point that out. Frankly, I was surprised that there was not a big increase in cases.

When you say that "Anyone with any level of intelligence knows that all groups of people will help spread a the virus." you are stating your opinion on the matter. That's not fact. I had the same opinion. But that did not happen.

This is why science does experiments. We can guess all we want and it would seem reasonable to us that something will happen if this happens. That  might be correct. It might not be. An experiment is done to see if something does happen. Every once in a while there is a surprise outcome such as the rioters not spreading the virus. I admit I was surprised.

The majority of protestors wore masks. That's why there was no spike. Proper masks work.

Do the Director General of WHO can make a speech, in which he makes opionios about the virus, but that is somehow NOT official ?

Even you just admitted it was about infection rate, and NOT the death rate, and you posted NOTHING to admit that and apologise.  You also got the month wrong and completely misrepresented the content of the WHO comments.  There is only ONE REASON why you would do all that.

But they are not.. because Ebola isn't as transimsisible.

Ebola is transmissible . The virus spreads through direct contact (via broken skin or mucous membranes, in the nose, mouth, or eyes). Blood or body fluids from infected individuals are capable of causing infection in others. Examples of body fluids include urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk, and semen.

BTW, Roofie....

Here's your orignal post where you posted the 100% FALSE claim.

It got 1 like, from andthen (you know, the guy who is scared to post what he thinks the Dem's will do) - :D :D :D

Here's my post rebutting your bull****.

It currently has 6 likes.  That ratio is probably a bit of an indicator for November, especially when you consider the type of people who frequent this forum.....

(I'll be quite bemused if trumpeters now head back to Roofie's link to give him some much needed support... )

The ebola outbreak in 2014 involved a particularly contagious form of the virus and had an R0 value between 1.5 and 1.9.  Coronavirus has an R0 between 2 and 6, most newest estimates put it close to 6 with the 2 value coming from early WHO estimates.  Common cold has an R0 value of 2 to 3, mumps has R0 between 10 to 12, and measles has R0 between 12 to 18.

R0 measures how transmittable an infectious illness is so while ebola is contagious it is on the lower end of contagiousness.

I have a feeling you didnt actually read what was posted but looked for one thing you thought you could easily prove wrong.

It's still transmissible. Contrary to what he/she said about it being not transmissible. I wasn't comparing the two. Thanks.

Edit. My apologies to the forum. I somehow missed the "as" in roofie's post. My apologies to RoofGardener as well. My bad. Sorry.

DarkHunter, thank you for showing me my foolishness. Lesson learned.

So Washington's method was to simply expose troops to smallpox.  That makes sense...and that's how herd immunity is established.

No, he chose to inoculate them as the article says.  There is a long history of disease on the battlefield, as Washington, a competent general and strategist knew.  He could not risk the fate of a new nation by exposing troops to smallpox and hoping enough would get well in time to fight.  He was outnumbered at the start.

They were inoculated with live smallpox virus.  That is the very definition of exposure, attempted under controlled conditions.

Herd immunity among those troops was the goal, don't you agree?

Exposure to a disease is different than inoculation. So please learn how words are used to describe different situation. For example, inoculation may not expose someone to a disease.

Herd immunity was not the goal. The concept of herd immunity didn't exist back then.  So what was not known could not have been the goal.

Trump has always been playing less less than a full deck of cards.

The real question is why did it take so long for Trump to catch COVID-19?  He was careless all of the time. He didn't use any of the health practices recommended by the health experts.
