Eldorado Posted October 2, 2020 #1 Share Posted October 2, 2020 A caravan of more than 1,000 US-bound migrants from Honduras entered Guatemala illegally Thursday — breaking through a border security cordon. The young men and women, many wearing face masks — some carrying backpacks and small children — pushed past armed Guatemalan security forces at the Honduran border post of Corinto. Their illegal entry — captured in a Facebook livestream — came after a border stand-off as Guatemalan authorities tried to stop them, demanding proof that they did not have COVID-19. "The innovation of traveling in groups without a smuggler may persist, but it seems to be devolving into smaller groups," said Andrew Selee, president of the Migration Policy Institute, which studies global migration trends. ...while traveling with a caravan might've been useful for trekking through Mexico, it proved impractical once arriving to the US-Mexico border, where entry became more difficult. aztek Posted October 5, 2020 #9 Share Posted October 5, 2020 Mexico deploys military to block migrant caravan arriving from Honduras Quote The migrants, mostly young men, say they are trying to escape poverty made worse by the coronavirus pandemic. Mexico believes their arrival is linked to the upcoming US elections. Mexico deployed its military along the southern border on Friday to block a migrant caravan. The caravan consists of thousands of migrants of Honduran origin, trying to travel through Guatemala and Mexico to reach the United States. "They're not going to cross," Francisco Garduno, the head of the Mexican migration authority, told reporters, adding that the migrants must "respect the immigration law." The government said that hundreds of military and immigration personnel will be deployed to the border. https://www.dw.com/en/mexico-deploys-military-to-block-migrant-caravan-arriving-from-honduras/a-55141816?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fzen.yandex.com
