Articles are showing the salaries of Washington representatives and what they are worth, the numbers don't add up...

Thanks for the link, but remember when you start a thread part of doing so is adding a link or source of information that supports your comments. I am not trying to give you a hard time, just trying to give you some information that may help you in the future.

i do see your point, about how much wealth Senators and Congressman amass while in office. That's why I personally think special interest groups that support these people should be banned, and all financial gains made by our Leadership should be completely transparent.

Hi Aroundthecorner

No point in getting an attitude, if you create a thread it is your responsibility to provide a link.

that is pretty much a common knowledge,  they do make much more than salary,  that is why they go there in a first place,  kickback, quid pro quo, political influence,   expending family business, have their kids get paid just cuz you are in a position  of power,   what is there to discuss, they are all corrupt sob's.

Hi Aroundthecorner

Not shaking in the least on my end, are you serious about discussing the subjects that you keep opening threads about. This is a discussion forum and asking us what do you think about  this and not giving any information to frame a discussion with is pointless. Personally I think many thinks some of them not appropriate to discuss here :D

As a side note for stress relief I type with my right hand while gently squeezing a suffie by the throat with my left hand.:D

You quoted me and made a direct comment to me why would I not think that the context of your post was not directed at me? I am calm I just don't understand what the point of your thread is and have seen similar threads by you and was only trying to get you to develop a discussion. It would seem that you lack an interest in constructive dialogue.

Such a great question I always wonder about. So they make good money and the ones that are there for decades i can see having a couple million through just saving or half-assed investing. So Pelosi's husband is supposedly some investment professional. Let's pretend she's on the up and up and she's worth 100 million cause he's really savvy. Then there's Maxine Waters. I just watched an opposition ad for her district filmed in front of her $6M mansion well outside her district of course. It's extremely expensive to keep up with a house of that price. Wouldn't property taxes alone be around her total salary? Then we have the Obamas. Holy macarol. They bought a $15M mansion. Let's be generous and say he made a net $3M off his presidential salary in 8 years. Now I know they have a book or two but to purchase a place that pricey one would need to be confidently worth several 10s of millions of dollars and still be slightly budget conscious considering they're fairly young still. Good lord they didn't write Harry Potter here. But hey, let's harp on the guy who made billions in the private sector and donates his presidential salary. Obviously he came to DC to get rich.

How much would Obama have made on the speaking circuit?

When I Googled "what does obama get for a speech" the first hit was an article saying he was paid $600,000 for a single speech. Wouldn't take many such appearance fees to buy a nice house... Of course, info came from a socialist site, so do you believe it?

The salaries are just ceremonial. They make their real money off speaking engagements. I wonder what AOC is worth now?

The smarter ones stretch it out over years, so it doesn't look as bad. Or, like the Clintons, form a foundation, or LLC.

Insider Trading pads their portfolio by some degree.

Even though they passed the STOCK Act they're still engaging in insider trading.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STOCK_Act

Amendment to the STOCK Act

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/STOCK_Act#Amendment

Quote

The STOCK Act was modified on April 15, 2013, by S.716. This amendment modifies the online disclosure portion of the STOCK Act, so that some officials, but not the President, Vice President, Congress, or anyone running for Congress, can no longer file online and their records are no longer easily accessible to the public. In Section (a)2, the amendment specifically does not alter the online access for trades by the President, the Vice President, Congress, or those running for Congress. The reasoning for this change was to prevent criminals from gaining access to the financial data and using it against affected persons. This bill was introduced by Senator Harry Reid on April 11, 2013. It was considered by the Senate and passed by unanimous consent. In the house, S.716 received only 14 seconds of discussion before being passed by unanimous consent.

The main provision that was repealed would have required about 28,000 senior government officials to post their financial information online, something that had been strongly criticized by federal government employee unions. A report by the National Academy of Public Administration, published in March 2013, said that the provision could threaten the safety of government employees abroad, as well as make it difficult to attract and retain public sector employees.

The amendment also eliminated the requirement for the creation of searchable, sortable database of information in reports, and the requirement that reports be done in electronic format, rather than on paper.

So business as usual in the Hallowed Halls of Congress.

Great question and one that hundreds of authors have discussed.    If you are implying corruption, you could as well have said that.

If it is really a question, consider two school teachers both making $35k a year.

One buys a new car, a boat and spends his summers on vacation.   The other buys a derelict property, spends his evenings fixing it up, sells it and buys another.  He works through the summer except for two weeks he devotes to his family.  In five years time he owns three rentals and has bought yet another fixer upper.  His friends ask him for help with properties because they know he is smart.  He helps, but has so much work he hires a part timer handy man and contracts out the sheetrock, wiring, and plumbing on the next three jobs.

In 10 years he has a contracting company with 12 full time employees and quits teaching to devote time to commercial property development.  I know this guy personally, he is a friend, and as good a person as you would want to meet.

In twenty-five years, he is a millionaire working part time because he enjoys it.  In twenty-five years the other teacher can't retire because he is broke, but he sure had fun.

If they are sharp and hard working, politicians have ample opportunities  to become millionaires.   If they are crooked, they still have ample opportunities.

Do you dislike hard working rich people or corruption?

It's your thread.  One random sentence with the word "wondering" under it does not evoke conversation or discussion.
