Another great idea behind making and starting a nuclear reactor that you have no clue on how to shut down :tsu:

many scientists say the risk it would pose is low.

So not no risk.  Risk.  Great.

The genius part was building it on a coast where there has historically been many tsunamis.  I mean, what could go wrong?

Its official. November will be a Godzilla-esque monster arising out from the sea.

2020 couldn't have gotten any worse.

No seafood from the Pacific for me.

Japan will release more than one million tonnes of radioactive water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

The decision, long-speculated but delayed for years due to safety concerns and protests, came at a meeting of Cabinet ministers who endorsed the ocean release as the best option.

The move is being fiercely opposed by Japan's neighbours - with China's foreign ministry calling the plan "extremely irresponsible".

The operator of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant has been prevented from restarting its only operable atomic facility after a series of safety breaches, dealing a significant blow to Japanese attempts to resume nuclear power generation.

Japan’s nuclear regulator is to issue a “corrective action order” on Wednesday that would ban Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) from transporting new uranium fuel to its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear plant in Niigata prefecture or loading fuel rods into its reactors.

Update:

Fukushima operators to build undersea tunnel to dump contaminated water

Operators of Japan’s stricken Fukushima nuclear plant have unveiled plans to construct an undersea tunnel to release more than a million tonnes of treated water from the site into the ocean.

Plans for the 1km tunnel were announced on Wednesday after the Japanese government decided in April to release the accumulated water in two years’ time.

Ministers say the release is safe because the water will have been processed to remove almost all radioactive elements, and will be diluted.

But the April decision triggered a furious reaction from neighbouring countries, and fierce opposition from local fishing communities.

Japan is preparing to release more than a million tonnes of treated wastewater from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the sea.

Nearly 12 years ago, a massive earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear catastrophe at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi plant.

The nuclear reactors have been decommissioned - a process which will take 40 years to complete.

But the shutdown has stalled over the build-up of vast quantities of water used to keep the damaged reactors cool.

To free up space, operator TEPCO want to release 1.3 million tonnes of the wastewater into the sea. They claim that the water is filtered to remove most radionuclides, making the release safe.

1. They should throw a humongous sponge (or a lot of little ones) into the water and let the water get soaked up.

2. Put the sponge in the sun and let the water dry out.

3. Once dry, compress the sponge(s) to smallest possible form.

4. Place sponges in sealed concrete containers and bury deep, deep, deep.

Problem solved :D.

That should be a LOT of sponges...

Japan Pushes The Button on Fukushima Water Dump, Despite Backlash

Japan began releasing wastewater from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, prompting a furious China to ban all seafood imports from its neighbour.

The start of the discharge of around 540 Olympic swimming pools' worth of water over several decades is a big step in decommissioning the still highly dangerous site 12 years after one of the world's worst nuclear accidents.

Live video provided by plant operator TEPCO showed two engineers clicking on computer mouses and an official saying – after a countdown – that the "valves near the seawater transport pumps are opening".

That should be enough to hide the trails of nuclear subs roaming around the Pacific Ocean...

Nope. China releases times more radioactive water per year than what Japan is releasing from Fukushima storages.

Quote

The annual amount of tritium contained in the treated and diluted water to be released from the plant in Fukushima is capped at 22 trillion becquerels.

Chinese nuclear energy sector data show the Qinshan power plant in Zhejiang Province released 218 trillion becquerels of tritium in 2021.

Fukushima: Japan PM eats fish from region after waste water row

Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida ate "very delicious" fish sashimi from Fukushima, in a video released by the Japanese government.

It follows a row over the discharge into the sea of treated radioactive wastewater from the 2011 Fukushima nuclear meltdown.

The United Nations atomic energy regulator says the discharge of filtered water into the Pacific Ocean is safe and will have "negligible" impact on people and the environment.

But China, the leading buyer of Japan's fish, announced on Thursday it was making a total ban on its seafood products, due to concerns for consumers' health.

Well, I wouldn't trust it.  I still will be avoiding seafood and fish from the Pacific.  Sad how some countries can cause such potential damage.

You'll probably suffer more from the effect of radon, than by eating seafood from the Pacific.

At least the world has 30 years to find out, maybe the planet won't last that long to really know...
