jethrofloyd Posted October 21, 2020 #1 Share Posted October 21, 2020 Nasa Osiris-Rex spacecraft lands on asteroid Bennu in mission to collect dust https://www.theguardian.com/science/2020/oct/21/nasa-osiris-rex-spacecraft-lands-on-asteroid-bennu-in-mission-to-collect-dust A Nasa spacecraft has successfully landed on an asteroid, dodging boulders the size of buildings, in order to collect a handful of cosmic rubble for analysis back on Earth. The space agency team behind the Osiris-Rex project said preliminary data showed the sample collection went as planned and that the spacecraft had lifted off the surface of asteroid Bennu.

toast Posted October 22, 2020 #10 Share Posted October 22, 2020 Wow! There are people who are not capable to park a 4 meter long car into a 8 meter parking lot. But there are also people who managed to took a truck sized object on a journey over a distance of 3.7B kilometers, at a speed of 50km/sec., for a rendezvous with a celestrial body of 500 meters in diameter, traveling at a speed of 28km/sec around the Sun and in a distance of 333M to Earth, doing some dust cleaning out there and bringing back the bag to Earth. Hell, thats what I call the dynamic of human skills!
Still Waters Posted October 24, 2020 #11 Share Posted October 24, 2020 Update: Quote A Nasa probe sent to collect rock from an asteroid several hundred million kilometres from Earth has grabbed so much that samples are spilling out. Officials behind the Osiris-Rex probe, which landed on Bennu earlier this week, say the collection operation may have performed too well. Pictures beamed back to Earth show a rock has wedged open the door of a container and a fraction of the sample is leaking, Nasa says. Nasa is now trying to stow it safely. "A substantial fraction of the required collected mass is seen escaping," head of mission Dante Lauretta said. The craft is believed to have collected some 400g (14oz) of fragments, he said. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-54672691 1
