Falling Fuel Tank May Have Caused Iran Blast

DUBAI (Reuters) - A fuel tank falling from an Iranian plane could have caused an explosion in Iran's Bushehr province, where the country is building a nuclear power plant, Iran state television said on Wednesday.

"A local source said the explosion could have been the result of the falling of an empty fuel tank from an Iranian plane," Al-Alam said.

The Arabic-language channel also quoted other witnesses as saying that an unknown aircraft fired a missile on Wednesday in a deserted area near the southern city of Dailam, which is in Bushehr province.

Iran explosion linked to dam construction work - reports

From:ireland.com

Wednesday, 16th February, 2005

The explosion which occured near a southern city in the Iranian province of Bushehr is reported to have been caused by construction work on a dam project.

Earlier reports on Iranian state television had suggested a missile had been fired from an aircraft near the port city of Dailam. A later report sugested the explosion had been caused by a falling fuel tank from an aircraft.

"We deny it," a spokesman said when asked about a report of an air attack on the southern port of Dailam. They declined to give any further details.

"The Revolutionary Guards also deny that an aeroplane has dropped its fuel tank," he added.

The reports said the explosion was heard in a deserted area near the southern city in the province of Bushehr where Iran has a nuclear power plant.

Senior Israeli security sources said Israel's military was not involved in any explosion.

Earlier, Iran's Intelligence Minister Ali Yunesi said the US has been flying unmanned spy planes over the nuclear sites.

"A powerful explosion was heard this morning on the outskirts of Dailam in the Bushehr province. Witnesses said that the missile was fired from an unknown plane 20 km from the city," the Arabic language Al-Alam said.

Iran's Russian-built 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactor, its only nuclear power plant, is due to start operating in Bushehr province in late 2005.

Iran and Syria, both locked in rows with the United States, said earlier today they will form a common front to face challenges and threats.

"We are ready to help Syria on all grounds to confront threats," Iranian Vice-President Mohammad Reza Aref said in Tehran after meeting Syrian Prime Minister Naji al-Otari.

Mr Otari told reporters: "This meeting, which takes place at this sensitive time, is important, especially because Syria and Iran face several challenges and it is necessary to build a common front".

Washington has branded Iran part of an "axis of evil" along with pre-war Iraq and North Korea and accuses Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons.

Iran says its nuclear programme is solely for electricity generation. US President George W. Bush has dubbed the country "the world's primary state sponsor of terror" and has warned the United States could use military action to prevent it acquiring a nuclear bomb.

Syria rejects accusations it supports terrorism.

Ah, the plot thickens.

Iran should start licking the states shoes now, because god knows what the US will do if they don't cooperate with the comeing (i think) weapon inspections. Lets just say it'll be as bad as Iraq, if not worse.

Its good to see Iran and syria joining forces. If only under better circumstances though.

It will only be a matter of time before Libya is tied into this somehow cause america has always looked for an excuse to dislike them

Unknown aircraft fires missile in Iran - TV

DUBAI (Reuters) - An unknown aircraft has fired a missile in a deserted area near the southern city of Dailam in the province of Bushehr where Iran has a nuclear power plant, Iranian state television reports.

"A powerful explosion was heard this morning on the outskirts of Dailam in the Bushehr province. Witnesses said the missile was fired from an unknown plane 20 km (12 miles) from the city," Iran's Arabic language Al-Alam said on Wednesday.

There was no immediate reaction from Iranian officials over the blast, Al-Alam said. The report was not carried in Persian media in Iran.

Iran's Russian-built 1,000-megawatt nuclear reactor, its only nuclear power plant, is due to start operating in Bushehr province in late 2005. Dailam is about 100 miles (160 km) from the nuclear power plant.

U.S. stock futures fell sharply following the news.

"This explosion basically sent chills down the spines of futures traders," said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Alaron Trading Corp in Chicago.

Crude oil prices also jumped on the Iran television report.

Tehran on Wednesday accused the United States of using satellites "and other tools" to spy on its nuclear sites, and U.S.-ally Israel said the Islamic republic was just six months away from having the knowledge to build an atomic bomb.

The Israeli warning followed U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's call last week for Iran to abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons and meet its international obligations if it was to be sure of avoiding conflict.

While Europe has pursued a policy of engagement with Iran, the United States and Israel have taken a more aggressive stance. Washington has said it favours diplomacy but does not rule out any option in stopping Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons, and Israel has hinted at possible military action.

Senior Israeli security sources denied any Israeli military involvement.

An Israeli air strike on the Iraqi reactor Osiraq in 1981 dealt a severe blow to Saddam Hussein's nuclear programme.

Iran will be hyped in the tv news in the next couple of months, first sutle-ley (its already begun.) It's propaganda!

Isn't it interesting that the first reports that it was a missile came from the state run tv network of Iran. Then later they denied it?

Perhaps it was Iran testing weapon out in the desert near their plant.

Who knows but there seems to be a pattern. Not too long ago N. Korea said that their nuclear technology was only going to be used for peaceful means [i.e. energy source]. Then there is an explosion felt/heard in N. Korea. They come up with some excuse as to what it was then change their story and deny it. Now, suddenly, they announce that they infact DO have a nuclear weapon!

Right now, all Iran has not done is announce that it actually has a nuclear weapon. If and when it does announce this, all hell will break loose.

Actually, if it turned out to actually be a missile fired from a plane, I wouldnt dismiss it as a miss so quickly. It could have been a warning shot, to tell Iran "We got that close to your reactor... we could have took it out... keep that in mind."

Infact, I dont think that kind of a move would be that bad...

If it was the us or israel, we would know it.

Maybe a year later tongue.gif

I don't know what that explosion was and I'm certainly not going to speculate. One thing I do know though is that even hitting a couple of sites blindly from a distance is not going to change anything in a positive way. It will just make things more complicated than they are right now for everybody. I think all the BS about making nukes and attacking Iran because of that is just propaganda and an attempt to bring the guys in Tehran to the negotiating table with the Europeans and eventually the Americans from the weakest possible position. The reasons for this are of course the huge natural influences Iran has in many countries in the Middle East, especially the ones under American occupation, and the realization by the West in general and the Americans in particular that without Iran coming along, it's going to be a very long and volatile adventure for them in this region. Let's just hope that everybody understands the need to be patient and thoughtful and not make any hasty decisions out of desperation about a very delicate situation, decisions that might prove to be very costly and that they might regret later when it's too late!

"playing with fire will make you pee in your bed at night"; an old Persian saying!
