Browser Advice from Tech people?

If you could rank your top five browsers and search engine apps and explain why they are ranked that way, what would they be?

I have used Chrome, Incognito Chrome, firefox, firefox focus, quant, opera, safari, tor, internet explorer, and microsoft edge.

I have also tried search engine apps like startpage and duckduckgo.

Has anyone tried brave? Cake? Or firefox nightly?

In terms of privacy, which do you think is the safest?

My tor browser has always had proxy issues so i kept having to re install it and eventually stopped using it. I never really used onion sites tho...

The best browser I recommend is Firefox.
Just the latest stable version, no nightly versions - these are for developers who want to help fix bugs.

If you want privacy, stay away from google and microsoft.

Firefox has a lot of customization and add-ons which can help you browse safer, but in the end it's up to the user habits.

I recommend https://privacytools.io/. It's a website that provides a variety of tools to help you regain some privacy.

privacytools.io #browser

privacytools.io #search-engines I like DuckDuckGo but you might not be happy with the search results if you come from google, startpage has the same search results as google does.

You might find better answers to your questions concerning online privacy at r/privacytoolsIO/.

I don't like how the brave team operates.

Tor is good but it depends on your threat level, really.

Forget proprietary browsers like chrome, edge, opera, internet explorer.

I typed out a reply and posted it but i'm not sure where it went. I thought that I had seen it up the last time I logged in. How unexplained! Lol.

No, I dont do any debugging. I like firefox and firefox focus. What I like about ff focus is that it has a simplistic design and is geared towards total focus and privacy. It has a trash icon which is sort of like the fire option for ddg. It doesnt have as many options for customizing your settings or working with other tools, which is sort of what i miss. Also no sync or pocket.

Have you tried privacy badger, adblocker, or https? I felt that privacy badger may be repetitive if you adjust privacy settings in ff just right?

I havent checked out the privacy tools website before. Thanks for recommending that!

Brave I have heard mixed reviews on but never really got around to doing much research in depth. I'm happy I stayed away from Opera then! I tried it as a recommendation from someone because it had a free vpn, but you can always use a vpn seperately.

I use FireFox and Palemoon (occasionally) and MyPal which is a browser optimized for XP.

I tried the Brave Browser but it is complex and I am not sure what all those features do and I don't want to mess something up.

I tried IceDragon and Commodo Dragon and they are okay but FireFox as pretty decent. As far as ad blocking goes I use Ublock Origin...works well too.

Firefox is way more customizable than firefox focus and any other browser that exists because of the about:config page, where you can tweak settings to your liking for more privacy or security.

I use https everywhere and ublock origin. Don't need privacy badger because ublock origin already does the job. The newest firefox version (83) has a https-only-mode tweak on the options page so I might get rid of https everywhere too.

Free vpns are a bad idea because they collect your data. I like protonvpn and mullvad.
Brave has mixed reviews because they put their own ads in their browser and there's also the BATs platform which privacy-concerned users don't like.

Edit: If you're planing on using Tor, don't add anything to it - leave it be to its defaults or you will compromise your fingerprint and be detectable. Tor users leave it to default so that everyone has the same fingerprint to be a straw in a huge straw bale. Even changing the size of the browser window compromises your fingerprint.

Edit2: you can test your browser to see how well you are protected from tracking and fingerprinting using this website: https://coveryourtracks.eff.org/
