Eldorado Posted December 8, 2020 Author #37 Share Posted December 8, 2020 K’gari (Fraser Island) has been burning for more than seven weeks and, so far, the fires have razed half of the World Heritage-listed island off the coast of Queensland. The devastation will become more pronounced in coming weeks, despite overnight rain. Much of the commentary on these fires has focused on how these landscapes are “meant to burn”, and that (luckily) there have been no major fires in the fire-sensitive, rainforest-style ecosystems in the island’s centre. Eldorado Posted December 10, 2020 Author #40 Share Posted December 10, 2020 With Fraser Island an incredibly biodiverse habitat, what is unfolding there seems to not be too distant to what struck at two of Australia's other World Heritage-listed regions last summer and has seen them become areas of "significant concern" in global conservation. The International Union for Conservation of Nature released its 2020 report, World Heritage Outlook 3, in early December and among the stark standouts for Australia was the downgrading of three of its heritage-listed regions. The union, a global authority on the status of the natural world and measures needed to safeguard it, has downgraded the ratings of the Greater Blue Mountains Area and the Gondwana rainforests following the impact of the Black Summer fires.
