I don't think people would pack up and leave.   They survived the battles with native Americans only to give up because of a few "hairy men".

Well according to one story, there was 3 hunters all of them native Americans all experienced, they went missing and the authorities launched a search party. They found a bow and a body in a lake, they never found the other 2 hunters.
