More people died of suicide in Japan in one month than the entire coronavirus pandemic

https://www.foxnews.com/world/more-people-died-of-suicide-in-japan-in-one-month-than-the-entire-coronavirus-pandemic

Japan is struggling with a mental health crisis as the coronavirus pandemic rages on, with more people dying in one month from suicide than from COVID-19 all year long.

The National Police Agency said suicides surged to 2,153 in October alone, with more than 17,000 people taking their own lives this year to date, CBS reported.

By comparison, fewer than 2,000 people in the country have died from COVID-19 in 2020.

Experts say the pandemic has exacerbated mental health issues due to prolonged lockdowns, isolation from family members, unemployment and other financial concerns, and a lack of school structure.

Very sad but not surprisingly considered Japans suicide culture. In Japan, the general attitude toward suicide has been termed "tolerant", and in many occasions suicide is seen as a morally responsible action. People often cite Japan's long tradition of "honorable suicide" as a reason for the high rate of suicides. In 2019 it was recorded that a total of 20,169  people committed suicide in Japan. If you look at previous years you can see that recorded suicides in Japan are actually declining.

Although making up a smaller proportion of suicides, the number of women taking their own lives jumped by around 40 percent. The number of suicides by students in elementary to high school more than doubled to 59 from the same period last year.

While this is very sad it isn't as uncommon like it is being made to appear just look at the information I have provided below as a sample suicide rate Pre-COIVD Japan was listed in 2017 as the 7th highest country do to Suicide. These figures go up down by the thousands on a annual basis, so I will be interested to see what the total number of deaths will be for 2020. However, 20,000 plus for such a small country, is unbelievable, the problem with the current statistics is that they are based upon 100,000 of the countries population. This really isn't a good indicator unless the country is only judged against other countries with a similar population, which is not how the Suicide death are counted and this is also how the COVID19 death rates are judged.

The total number of suicides in Japan in 2017 was 21,140, a decrease for the 8th consecutive year, according to a preliminary report issued by the National Police Agency (NPA) on Friday. The number was 757 fewer than in 2016. The number of suicides per 100,000 people dropped to 16.7, the NPA said.
